This is a common problem we attend most days that is a simple fix and 99% does not require unnecessary tyre replacement. A customer calls us up saying they have a slow puncture usually going flat in 3-5 days.
The cause:
When the metal of the wheel is left open to the elements, including rain, snow and salt on the roads, it starts to bubble up around the wheel lip causing a weak seal for the tyre causing it to slowly go flat or bring a warning light on your dashboard.
The fix:
The tyre is removed and has the tyre bead cleaned with a wire brush so it’s clean from paint and metal debris. The wheel rims lip is cleaned back to bare metal using an air tool die grinder with a wire wheel attachment, the valve is also removed and the area that the valve sits in is also cleaned to bare metal. We then put a layer of bead sealant on the rim, replace the valve and refit the tyre, we inflate the tyre to the correct pressure then balance the wheel. Then the wheel is fitted back onto the car and tightened using a calibrated torque wrench to ensure the car is safe when travelling from A to B.
