We have the 1904 Model C back in following its last outing at the London to Brighton in November. For some time we’ve been waiting on Blockley Tyres to produce a suitable replacement in the 28x3” size and they are finally available! You can see from the photos that they look very nice and feel to be of very good quality. The tyres that were on the car had plenty of tread but you can see how they’ve perished. We also took the opportunity to fit quality Michelin long stem valve inner tubes so the brass caps can be retained.

With a little time on our hands, it was time to give a couple of our Ts a little tlc. The van needed some regular servicing after being unused for a while but it was decided the big end bearings were starting to get a little noisy so the sump plate was removed and shims removed before refilling with fresh oil.
The Tourer missed out on being used much last year and again, needed some basic servicing to get her ready for the year.

The owner of this lovely 1914 Tourer plans on really using it including trips to Europe. One of his concerns was the riveted clamshell rear axle so he asked us to rebuild it with later cast housings (the originals will be retained in case he ever wants to return it to standard). We had a pair of 1915 housings which were cleaned and refurbished before rebuilding the internals with new half shafts, thrust washers and crown wheel and pinion. The propshaft was already fitted with a modern spool bearing upgrade but the torque tube was still dismantled to check everything.
Here’s to many trouble free miles.

We seem to be having a bit of a run of early Fords lately. After the recent visit of a 1903 Model A, we had a 1912 and 1914T before this 1909 T arrived.
Today, another 1914 T has arrived ready for an axle rebuild!
The 1909 makes a nice change for us as they are rare at the best of times. This one hasn’t been used for a couple of years and some of the valves had stuck so it was necessary to remove the head to free them. Whilst the head was off a full de-coke was carried out and the valves reground (one needed replacing). A new exhaust manifold replaced the warped one it came in with whilst a clean out of the (later) carb and service saw the engine running nicely.
The front end required a fair bit of work to remove play in most joints.
Take a look at the pictures to see some of the differences to the later cars.

It was a bit of a Model A production line last week as a customer’s 1903 8hp came in for a check over ready for this year’s runs. We are still collecting parts for the 1904 10hp engine before we can begin reassembly.

Despite lots of interest in the pickup it is still available. Most of the work is completed and it will be returning to the owner soon. He will consider offers around £11k.
If anyone is in the market for a nice Roadster pickup, the owner of this one says age has caught up with him and it’s time to find it a new home.
It has come into us for a few jobs but it has been regularly used and the bodywork is in great condition.
Get in touch if it’s of interest.

For Sale. Car transporter/flatbed trailer. Selling as a project on behalf of a customer. Perfect size for a Model T at just over 14’ bed length. Boards are rough and would recommend replacing 4 tyres due to some perishing. Tows well but as it hasn’t been used for a while we would recommend a check over of the brakes etc.
Cheap at £500.

So much has to come off of the engine before it can be removed but we have reached that stage! Next up is stripping the engine to assess what is needed.

Caution, some viewers may be offended by these pictures of a 1904 “naked” 😋
For quite a few years this early Ford has had a knock inside the engine. It has been possible to “manage” this but with the London to Brighton run out of the way it has been decided it’s time to take a better look.
As you can see, the car is essentially mid engined so the only way to get good access to the engine is to remove the whole body. As these cars run a total loss oiling system they get pretty mucky (plus a drive train flinging grease everywhere!) so the first job has been to degrease as much as possible before removing the engine.
It’s rare to get a chance to see one of these early cars exposed so we hope you enjoy seeing the pictures.

Once again we were lucky enough to participate in the London to Brighton veteran car run in one of the early Fords we look after.
The usual prep work was carried out in advance on both the 1904 Model A and Model C before delivering the cars to London on Thursday and the. The trailers to Brighton on Friday. Both cars went to the concours on Pall Mall which was a great opportunity to chat to visitors about them.
Sunday morning started wet but thankfully soon cleared. Both cars behaved and apart from minor adjustments it was fuel and oil only that was required.
We’re pleased to say all of our Ford friends made the finish including three more Model As and another Model C plus an extremely rare Model B (one of only two running examples and the most original).
A great weekend of socialising with early Fords friends.

The latest patient T is this preserved 26/7 Coupe. The ow er uses it as his Winter car but on a recent rally the starter bendix locked up. He wants a modern 12v starter fitting along with a distributor conversion plus some other jobs sorting. Whilst waiting on the starter to arrive we’ve made a start on the distributor install which required the radiator to be removed. We’ve tried to hide as much as possible so the modern coil is hidden inside the original coil box. You may also notice the early version of a 12v Dynator that has been installed for some time.
