2016 VW Caddy 2.0 TDI in for a major service and a timing belt and water pump replacement. Having only covered a mere 49k miles the front main seal was found to be leaking, an extremely common occurrence with Euro 6 VAG engines. Customer authorised sump removal and clean, strainer flush, oil pump belt replacement and replacement of all stretch bolts and seals as required. VA Group have opted to increase timing belt intervals to 10 years or 140k miles. While timing belts could under certain conditions last that long, unfortunately having seen and rectified many leaking front main seals (requiring timing belt removal) and leaking and/or bearing failure on water pumps which can lead to expensive engine internal damage, VAG-TEK’s recommended replacement intervals for timing belt kit and water pump on post 2009 cars remains at 5 years or 80k miles and for commercial vehicles and pre 2009 cars at 4 years and 60k miles. Preventative maintenance is far cheaper than the cost of repair when timing related components fail.
