Crosswinds and motorway stability are common complaints with panel van conversions like this Adria Twin, so the owner decided to upgrade the suspension properly.

Upgrades like this are becoming increasingly popular with motorhome owners looking to improve stability and overall driving comfort.

We had this fantastic van in the workshop for a serious suspension upgrade.

Suspension upgrades like this are one of the most noticeable improvements you can make to the way a motorhome drives.

The owner wanted the van to feel more planted on the road โ€” especially on motorways โ€” and less affected by crosswinds.

We started the work by replacing the rear bump stops with a supplementary airbag system. This type of airbag setup supports the rear suspension and significantly improves stability when the van is loaded.

If youโ€™ve never driven a motorhome with rear support airbags before, itโ€™s difficult to imagine the difference they make.

There are several versions of these systems available โ€” from simple single-valve setups all the way to fully independent airbag systems with compressor and reservoir tank.

This installation was top-tier, featuring independently adjustable airbags with an onboard compressor and control panel.
(The only component not fitted was the reservoir tank, which isnโ€™t essential but helps speed up pressure adjustments.)

Once the airbags were installed and plumbed in, we fitted and wired the compressor and control system.

To complete the upgrade the suspension was further improved with:

โ€ข Bilstein B6 shock absorbers (front and rear)
โ€ข Heavy-duty front springs

This combination dramatically improves body control, stability and overall driving confidence.

๐——๐—ถ๐—ฑ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐—ธ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜„?

When rear airbags are independently adjustable and paired with a compressor, they can also be used to help level the motorhome when parked.

Within their limits they allow quick and easy adjustment for:

โ€ข Front-to-back (pitch)
โ€ข Side-to-side (roll)

Itโ€™s a very useful feature โ€” not only improving the driving experience but also making life easier when setting up on uneven pitches.

Have you ever upgraded the suspension on your motorhome or campervan?
What difference did it make to the way it drives?

A-Class Itineo โ€“ Front Window Damp Repair

This Itineo A-Class returned to us following last yearโ€™s habitation inspection, where high moisture readings were detected around the front side cab window frames.

The readings were significant enough to confirm remedial work was required, so after discussing the options with the owner we proceeded with the correct repair โ€” not a temporary fix.

Both side cab windows were removed completely.
The timber frame was allowed to dry properly.
All old sealant was removed and mating surfaces were cleaned back to solid material before resealing and refitting the frames.

As the photos show, this was caught just in time.

The timber had already started to deteriorate, but structural integrity was still intact. Another season of water ingress would very likely have meant structural timber replacement and exterior paintwork reconstruction.

Older A-Class motorhomes are not everyoneโ€™s favourite jobs.
Access is tight, construction methods are different, parts can be scarce or discontinued, and the way they are built makes them more complex to strip and rebuild properly.

But if you understand how theyโ€™re constructed โ€” and take the time to do it correctly โ€” they are absolutely repairable.

This is exactly why proper habitation checks matter.
Damp does not fix itself โ€” and early intervention makes all the difference.

One more motorhome saved.
Dry, sealed and ready for the next adventure in Surrey.

๐Ÿ”ง Major Overcab Reconstruction โ€“ Factory Spec Restoration

We had this rental motorhome in after it was guided off a ferry in the wrong lane and struck a height barrier.

The impact caused severe damage to the entire overcab roof section and upper side wall structure.

After a full structural assessment, we made the decision not to patch-repair the roof skin.
Instead, we ordered a complete new overcab roof section directly from Adria.

As an independent Adria warranty centre, we have direct access to genuine factory parts โ€“ which allows us to restore vehicles properly rather than cosmetically hiding damage.

The repair involved:

โ€ข Removing the damaged overcab roof section
โ€ข Rebuilding the upper side wall framework
โ€ข Refitting and bonding a brand-new factory roof panel
โ€ข Re-sealing and finishing to original specification

The motorhome is now structurally sound and restored to factory standard.

Overheating Truma boiler โ€“ frost damage case

We had an Auto-Trail in for various repairs, one of which was an intermittent Truma boiler overheat (hot water warning) when running on gas.

With a winter trip to Europe planned, the customer understandably needed reassurance that the boiler wouldnโ€™t fail halfway through the trip.

Intermittent faults can be tricky โ€” during testing the boiler was often running normally. However, for an experienced technician, an overheating Truma boiler immediately raises suspicions of frost damage.

That suspicion increased when we noticed the boiler was fitted with a manual frost protection valve.

On strip-down, the issue became clear.
The water chamber had expanded due to freezing and was pushed hard against the heat exchanger. There must be a defined air gap between these components โ€” without it, excessive heat transfers directly into the water chamber, causing overheating. This is dangerous both for occupants and for the vehicleโ€™s water system.

Unfortunately, the expanded tank had also forced itself against one of the heating elements. Truma heating elements must be clamped evenly and to a very specific torque across the core. Once that relationship is disturbed, premature element failure is inevitable.
This is why we never replace heating elements individually on Truma boilers.

With both the water tank and heater core compromised, a rebuild was no longer economical. We discussed the options with the customer, who decided that replacement was the correct long-term solution.

Once the new boiler arrived, we:
โ€ข Installed and commissioned the unit
โ€ข Replaced the manual frost valve with a Truma automatic frost protection valve, significantly reducing the risk of future freeze damage

We then completed the remaining repairs (separate post coming) and the vehicle is now ready for winter adventures with confidence โœ…

VW Transporter T6 in with engine management light on and stuck in limp mode ๐Ÿšโš ๏ธ

A quick diagnostic pointed to a fuel temperature sensor fault.
From experience with these vans in fleet maintenance, we knew it was unlikely the sensor itself โ€” much more likely a wiring issue.

And sure enough, on inspection we found the loom rubbing on the cam cover, which had worn through the insulation and caused the fault.

While there, we also spotted rubber hoses chafing against each other, so we corrected that too โ€” likely preventing a future breakdown.

๐Ÿ”ง Loom repaired & protected
๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Routing corrected
๐Ÿš Fault cleared โ€” van back to full health

Update on the T6.1 from earlier โ€” now fully repaired โœ…

This van originally came in with both electrical and gas system faults. The final part we were waiting on was a new gas filler hose from the distributor, which arrived a few days ago.

Weโ€™ve now:
โ€ข โœ… Replaced the gas filler hose
โ€ข โœ… Installed a new gas regulator
โ€ข โœ… Fully tested the complete gas system

What genuinely shocked us was the condition of the original compression joint on the old hose โ€” especially considering this conversion is less than 4 years old. Severe corrosion at a critical joint like this is not something you ever want to see on a gas system.

Another perfect example of why proper inspections and professional repairs matter โ€” safety first, always. ๐Ÿ‘

Swift Kon-Tiki in for a roof repair after meeting a low tree branch ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿฅถ

The impact caused a deep crack in the GRP roof panel.
The owners temporarily covered it with a sticker โ€” a smart move to slow down water ingress โ€” but a proper structural repair was definitely needed.

Our body technician:

๐Ÿ”ง Repaired the cracked GRP section
๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Reinforced and reshaped the damaged area
๐ŸŽจ Prepped and colour-matched the panel
๐Ÿš Resprayed the full repair zone for a seamless finish

The roof is now fully watertight, structurally sound, and looks like new again

โšก Flexi Solar Nightmare โ€“ Nissan Elgrand fixed.

This Nissan Elgrand camper came in for a failed solar panel. No surprise here: like most pop-tops, it had a flexi solar panel bonded to the roofโ€ฆ and, as usual, it failed after a few years.

๐Ÿ‘‰ In our experience, flexi solar panels rarely last longer than 4 years โ€” especially on raised roofs where heat buildup is extreme.

After checking the system (the MPPT solar controller on board could comfortably handle more power), we upgraded the setup to a 200W panel for better performance .

Removing the old panel was the painful part โ€” cutting off bonded flexi panels needs patience, otherwise you will damage the pop-top roof.

And there was another consequence:
Because the fault wasnโ€™t spotted immediately, the leisure battery had been deeply discharged and suffered permanent damage. A perfect example of why a habitation check can save you money.

We installed a replacement battery the next day, tested the system end-to-end, and the Elgrand is now ready for more adventures. ๐Ÿš๐Ÿ”ง

Another lovely VW T6.1 camper in today for a full habitation check and two appliance faults โ€” a dead microwave and a fridge that refused to cool. ๐Ÿ”ง๐Ÿš

The microwave removal turned into a proper puzzle.
To get it out, we had to remove the entire hob/sink unit first (including safely disconnecting the gas) and then work out the only angle it would squeeze through. Conversions like this donโ€™t leave much tolerance.

Next up: the fridge.
The 12V supply tested perfectly, so the fault pointed straight to the fridge unit itself. The customer needed the van back quickly, so we sourced a Vitrifrigo replacement on short notice. It dropped straight into the existing space and is now running perfectly. โ„๏ธ

Small insider fact for campervan owners:
We used Vitrifrigo fridges in the custom rental campers we built 10โ€“12 years ago. Out of 40 units, only one ever failed. Thatโ€™s why we still trust them today.

A special offer for converted campervan habitation checks is coming in the next few days. If you own a VW Transporter, T6/T6.1, or any converted camper, keep an eye on our upcoming posts. ๐Ÿ‘€

๐Ÿ”ฅ Hidden Fire Hazard Found Inside This VW T6.1 Camper โ€“ Luckily We Caught It in Time

We had a VW T6.1 campervan in today for a habitation check and a few small repairs.
But one of those โ€œsmallโ€ issues turned into a major safety risk.

โšก Tailgate Spotlight Fault โ€“ Wiring Burn Marks Discovered

A non-working spotlight in the tailgate led us to remove the inner panel.
Inside, we found:
โ€ข 12V wiring shorting out
โ€ข A connection that was poorly made and totally unsecured
โ€ข Melted insulation with visible burn marks on both the panel and the tailgate metal
โ€ข The wire had finally disconnected due to heat

This could have developed into a serious fire inside the tailgate.

โœ” Fix: We cut out the damaged wiring, rewired the circuit safely, and installed proper crimped, insulated connections.

โธป

๐Ÿ”ง Gas System โ€“ Regulator Failure

The customer reported no gas flow to appliances.
Testing showed:
โ€ข The gas regulator had failed
โ€ข It was only 4 years old (normally replaced after ~10 years)
โ€ข But it had been mounted exposed to the elements, which likely caused an early failure

โœ” Fix: New regulator fitted, full system tested and confirmed safe.

โš ๏ธ LPG Fill Hose โ€“ Heavy Corrosion

We also found the gas fill inlet hose badly corroded.
The compression joint actually moves, which is unsafe and must be replaced.

The hose wasnโ€™t a standard size, but our supplier sourced the correct part โ€” now on order and booked in for fitting.

โธป

๐Ÿ“ท Reversing Camera Replacement

The reversing camera unit was faulty as well.
A genuine VW replacement has been ordered directly from VW.

We recently had this lovely Mobilvetta A-Class in for a mix of bodywork and technical repairs.

The front grille needed repair and respray due to a crack under the headlight, and we also replaced the headlight bracket and the height-adjuster motor. The Hella LED daytime running lights were playing up too โ€” which would have caused issues at the next MOT.

The main challenge was removing the front grille. A-Class motorhomes are often built with zero thought for serviceability, and in this case the grille was bonded in multiple places. We had to carefully work it free without damaging any surrounding panels.

Once our body technician finished the repair and paintwork, we moved on to a separate issue: the van had developed an intermittent water leak.

We traced the problem to a shocking installation behind the external shower outlet. Every push-fit connector was under extreme stress, and both hot and cold pipes were actually kinked.
Push-fit systems should never be under tension โ€” misaligned pipework will always leak sooner or later.

We redesigned the junction, replaced the stressed fittings and pipe sections, and the van is now back with its happy owner โ€” leak-free and looking great again.

โšก RCD Case Study #2 โ€“ 2006 Swift Suntor โšก

Our next safety-related find comes from a 2006 Swift Suntor. The owner originally booked us for a window leak, but during a chat it turned out the van hadnโ€™t had a habitation check for years.
Agreeing to have one done turned out to be a very smart decision.

๐Ÿ”Ž What we found:
โ€ข Some early-stage water ingress (now scheduled to be repaired)
โ€ข And more importantly โ€” a faulty RCD

โธป

๐Ÿ”Œ So what was wrong with the RCD?

RCD testing must be carried out on both โ€œsidesโ€ of the AC current.
In simple terms:
Weโ€™re checking that the RCD can โ€œseeโ€ both halves of the alternating current so it can protect you if a fault occurs.

This one only โ€œsawโ€ one side โ€” the test failed on the other โŒ

That means if an electrical fault had occurred, there was a high chance it would NOT have provided electric shock protection.
Motorhomes move, shake, rattle and flex constantly, so electrical issues have a much higher chance of developing than in a house.

โธป

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ What we did:

We explained the situation to the owners, replaced the faulty RCD with a new, correctly-rated unit, and fully retested the system.
Final results: PASS โœ”๏ธ

The motorhome left us knowing its electrical safety system is working properly and ready to protect the occupants on their adventures.
