"Racing improves the breed" ... "win on Sunday - sell on Monday" ... "there is no substitute for cubic inches" ... "the best bloke for the job is the one who loves doing it!" These are all clichés of course but you can apply them all to Thunder Road Cars, an enterprise established by Cheng Lim in 1984. Cheng and his talented team can build a car with their bare hands - engineering, bodywork, paint

ing, trimming and wiring. Over the course of more than 30 years the Thunder Road Cars team have built, part-built, finished off, repaired and modified a multitude of road and racing cars.

Did you know it’s our 40th birthday this year? Looks like there might be a bit of drizzle tomorrow morning, but it won’t discourage us, it’s warm in the workshop. Come on down for the 9th Thunder Road open day!

Many of the cars we routinely deal with require parts that are unique, different from original equipment or unavailable. So we make them in our machine shop. Yesterday a friend and customer of Thunder Road found a piece was missing from his car to reassemble the handbrake before heading abroad. The part could not be found on the shelves in England so we made it.

Continuing our Boat Story... Remember the brown hell of the last post? This is the Buick Riviera's new passenger cabin floor, anti-corrosion coated inside and out. There were no suitable repair panels for any of it so everything was cut and rolled from fresh metal in our workshop. We also rolled the owner's racing number into the driver's footwell.

The trunk was mostly dissolved, with no useable metal remaining within its perimeter. There wasn't much perimeter either. Such was the extent of the corrosion, we ended up making new wheel houses from scratch. This crept into new lower sections for the rear fenders when we unearthed a backstreet 'plate and filler' repair from the car's past. The new trunk is pretty faithful to the original, including new rubber mountings between the body shell and separate chassis, but we added a removable centre section to reach the fuel tank sender without removing the tank. It's almost a shame to cover it all up with carpet.

The Riviera Resurrection... the first of a series of posts about reviving a relic. And two more R words: rust ...and RUST.

This 1973 Buick 'Boat Tail' Riviera Gran Sport Stage 1 arrived on a low loader with the brief: "please get it running, make the brakes work and patch up the floor pan – there are repair panels online". Sounds simple when you say it quickly.

The panels online turned out to be neither available nor big enough to reach the nearest metal to attach them. So much of the trunk had dissolved it was not immediately obvious what was missing. But the engine fired up easily and made good oil pressure. Underneath the layers of barn dust was unmarked, original upholstery. And we would later discover that with a little attention to the wiring all its electrical gadgets work, from the key-in-ignition buzzer to the driver's electric seat.

Its owner is now enjoying driving it as a reliable, rolling restoration while thinking about paint colour.

Great to see you all today, thanks for bringing the weather and such a brilliant variety of cars! ☀️
