There are misconceptions around an expired or failed MOT ‘grace period’ - but what is an expired MOT grace period? If you’re under the impression there is a two-week period of time where you can still drive your vehicle with an expired MOT, read on now to find out how this misunderstanding could lead you to a hefty fine and cost you up to eight points on your licence.

The MOT grace period is a misconception that there is a two-week period of time for lapsed MOTs. This is not true – and, if your MOT has expired, it is illegal to be driving your vehicle on the road. However, there was an MOT grace period during the coronavirus pandemic. This only covered vehicles that where the MOT was due to expire between 30th March and 31st July 2020.

If found driving your vehicle with a failed or expired MOT, you run the risk of receiving a £1,000 fine and up to eight points on your licence. Want to know more about the legalities around driving without an MOT? Section 47 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 explains in more detail.

There’s a great level of uncertainty surrounding whether or not it’s illegal to drive barefoot in the UK, with numerous reasons cited as to why you’re breaking the law if you do so.
While these may all be valid points, none of them are technically correct. Here is the law in a nutshell: it is not illegal to drive in the UK without shoes on and the same applies for wearing flip flops - there is a catch though.

You can get behind the wheel of a vehicle barefoot or while wearing flip flops, provided you are able to operate the controls safely. If you do so with wet feet, for example, you might be putting yourself, your passengers and other road users at risk by not being able to drive the car safely. This is illegal.

And while it's not illegal to drive without shoes on, that doesn’t mean it’s right.

According to the Driving Standards Agency – the body that regulates the UK driving test – “suitable shoes are particularly important behind the wheel. We would not recommend driving barefoot because you don’t have the same braking force with bare feet as you do with shoes on.”

Field of vision! During an MOT test.

The following are only considered a defect if they seriously restrict the driver’s view:
taxi signs to indicate when the vehicle is ‘for hire’
‘official’ stickers, such as parking and disabled permits
sun visor on the driver’s side that cannot be stowed in the ‘off screen’ position
windscreen wipers that automatically stop in a position obscuring the view
You can remove items such as a sat nav or air fresheners that obstruct the driver’s view of the road. However, make sure you tell the driver.

Driving rules on clothing could land Brits with £5,000 fine!

It states that items should not be worn if they “prevent you from using the controls in the correct manner”.

Such items include baggy jeans, long dresses, certain pairs of sunglasses and a wide array of footwear.

Putting you back on the road!

If your car fails the MOT due to a defect which the Government says is dangerous, by driving it on the road, you are committing an offence.
Should you choose to drive the vehicle away from the MOT garage with that dangerous defect, the garage can’t stop you doing that if you decide to do so, then a police car spotting you on the road will be able to look up that MOT failure, and know you shouldn’t be driving your car – so penalty points could follow. And if that dangerous component fails, causing a collision, and perhaps death or injury, then you really would be in trouble!
