Weekend 3 of 4 in a row was thankfully a bit closer to home, but that didn’t make things any less stressful. A nice short journey to Duns for the Jim Clark Rally.

The week got off to a hectic start after having to repair the damage and re-prep Ross’ car from Carlow’s wall incident, as well as Craig’s car from Sunday’s test day. Add in getting all the other cars ready to leave the workshop on Thursday morning, and it’s safe to say there wasn’t much sleep had last week 😴

Friday morning meant shakedown for most of the crews to get up to speed on the fast Borders lanes. No major dramas for any of the lads, just an unfortunate broken driveshaft for father-and-son pairing Craig and Ian Macivor. The long wait between shakedown and the start of the event at least gave us some downtime.

First crew to tackle the event, and only taking part in the national section, were Ross Hunter and Chris Dodds in the 208 Rally4. Their third event in three weeks, this time competing in Round 2 of the Stellantis UK Cup. Four stages lay ahead on some of the best roads the Borders has to offer, and the times were very impressive until a puncture on Stage 3 set them back. Saturday morning’s aim was to claw back as much time as possible. A quick spring change in service with 10 minutes to go kept things entertaining, but helped them climb back to 24th overall and 2nd in the Stellantis Cup.

Next up were Craig Rutherford and Richard Simmonds in the Mk2 Es**rt, contesting all three days. Friday night would prove tricky, with a sensor failing early on and reducing the car’s power. Thankfully, it was repaired in service and all was well for the remaining two stages. Saturday brought no major dramas at all, using this part of the event to get up to speed for Sunday’s Championship round. They finished Saturday 34th overall.

Sunday was Round 3 of the Scottish Rally Championship. Again, it was a relatively trouble-free run, with speed increasing throughout the day until the clutch developed an issue. Thankfully, they made it back to service for the boys to change before heading back out to make up for lost time. They finished the event 15th overall and 1st in class.

Joe Crawford and Tommi Henderson also competed across all three days in another Mk2 Es**rt. Another local man to the Borders, Joe was keen to get stuck into the stages. Friday night passed with no dramas and a clean run. Saturday morning brought even more confidence in the daylight. All was going well until running a bit wide after a hairpin on Stage 4 and getting beached, but luckily they managed to get back onto the stage with minimal time lost, finishing 41st overall. A clutch change on Saturday night had the car ready to go again for Sunday’s event. Thankfully, there were no more excursions into any ditches, just a cracked engine mount to contend with, but all in all it was a good weekend for the local man, finishing 21st overall on sunday.

Mike Stuart and Clare Fraser were in a slightly newer and more modern-spec Es**rt for the weekend after borrowing the car from Paddy Munro. Friday’s shakedown stage gave Mike his first taste of tarmac in the car, and just two runs were enough to leave smiles on their faces after that baptism of fire.

Onto Sunday and they came straight out of the blocks setting great 2WD times. Time for service, and the only job needing done was cable-tying the wipers to stop them lifting up the windscreen when flat out 😬 On the second-last stage, the car cut out, costing them over a minute. Knowing what the issue was, they just needed to nurse it to the finish, with the problem getting worse on the final stage. Fortunately, they made it across the line, although another minute was lost. They finished the day 24th overall — still a fantastic result considering it was Mike’s first ever tarmac rally and first event in the car (not sure it’ll be the last!).

Craig and Ian Macivor also took part in shakedown on Friday, as this was Craig’s first ever closed-road rally.

Sunday morning and honestly, I don’t know who was more nervous — Craig or Ian 😬 However, off to the stages they went, and the nerves soon settled once the helmets were on (for Craig at least 😆) setting very competitive times considering his lack of experience on closed roads. All was looking good for a strong finish until the car lost drive on the final stage 😤

Robbie Wood and Steven Brown took part in Robbie’s newly acquired 208 Rally4, also competing across all three days. With a bit of added pressure too, Robbie being another local to the Borders, but that didn’t seem to faze him at all. Confidence and speed improved as the weekend went on, finishing the national event 44th overall.

Sunday brought another opportunity to keep getting used to the new car and continue building confidence. All was going well until they went off on the penultimate stage. Thankfully, both lads were okay and unharmed.

Yet again, a massive thanks to all the lads for their hard work in the workshop and on the event. There’s absolutely no way any of this would be possible without everyone’s help 💪🏽

Next up was another trip across the water, this time back to Ireland for the Carlow Stages, with myself and Jack getting the job for this one.

Ross Hunter and Chris Dodds were back out in the 208 after their class-winning run at the Manx last weekend, looking for another strong result in the Stellantis Peugeot Cup. It turned out to be one of the hardest events in a long time when it came to choosing the right tyres, with the weather changing constantly throughout the day.

The first loop was tricky but drama-free. Unfortunately, the same couldn’t be said for the second loop after an overshoot sent the car over a wall and into a field — definitely not plan A for the weekend! That left a fair bit of work to do in service patching up the front end of the car, with even Bunny getting stuck in. Fortunately, there was no major damage done and they were good to go again for the final loop, finishing the event 4th in the Stellantis Cup.

Poor Jack definitely drew the short straw this weekend, driving the van and trailer home himself while I wrote this from Dublin Airport on Sunday night, flying home to try and get ahead of what’s set to be a busy week in the workshop (not helped by the wall 🥴) getting all the cars ready for the Jim Clark Rally this coming weekend.

Meanwhile, Robbie was on testing duties for the second time this year, with Craig Rutherford taking part in the tarmac test day at Dundrennan to get some valuable seat time before this weekend’s Jim Clark Rally. Matt Edwards also sat in to give some driver tuition, and it was nice to hear his kind words on how well the car is set up too! 😁

First of four events for us in May saw us head for the Isle of Man.

Starting the week off on Wednesday saw Jack touch down on the island on Loganair’s finest pedal-powered plane to get things set up and organised ready for everyone else’s arrival.

Thursday morning, myself, Robbie, Ross and Alan headed for the midday boat to then meet up with Jack, who was flat out (literally) 😴

Scrutineering done, Friday was then upon us, with all four cars ready to start. John and Jamie then touched down on the island ready to assist over the long two days that lay ahead.

Gordon Morrison and Ian Parker were in the Mk2 Es**rt, hoping for a repeat of last year’s result (1st 2WD). A strong entry meant the scene was set for a few close battles. After a trouble-free run on Friday’s stages, they were sitting 9th overall. Saturday morning’s loop brought a clutch issue which slightly hampered the pair. At midday service, it was all hands on deck to resolve the issue. One final loop of stages remained and it was a close battle, with seconds separating those at the top of the 2WD class. The final stage shootout was on, but unfortunately it didn’t go our way by a mere 0.1 second 😩

Still, a fantastic result with 10th overall and 2nd 2WD.

Kyle Adam and Steven Brown were back in the camp in their Mk2 Es**rt. It was their first time competing on this event, so there was a bit of a challenge ahead. As ever though, Kyle got stuck in and the times were very impressive for his first visit to the island. Stage 7 proved entertaining after a spin nearly ended up through someone’s garage door 😬
Adding to the manic midday service on Saturday, the welder was flat out after a cracked link box was spotted.
With all the dramas sorted (apart from touching a wall with the rear of the car on the final loop 🤫), the pair finished 17th overall and 3rd in the Protyre category.

Ross Hunter and Chris Dodds were back together in the 208 Rally4. Again, a strong field of front-wheel-drive cars had entered. Thankfully, the event was drama-free for the pair. Some setup changes and several brake pad changes along the way were all that was required. The pair brought the car home 25th overall and 1st in class & front-wheel drive.

New to the team was Joe Crawford and Tommi Henderson in yet another Mk2 Es**rt. Where do you even start with this man? Never a dull moment and never a shortage of laughs anyway! A man not too bothered about results and just looking for good crack, but still managing to put in some competitive times. After an alternator failure on Friday night, they thankfully made it to service for the lads to change it and all was well again. Saturday’s stages were going smoothly until they unfortunately lost some time after sliding off the road and getting stuck for several minutes. Thanks to the spectators for getting the car back on the road. They ended their weekend 58th overall.

Home time then came, with five of the lads heading home on the washing machine with wings. Leaving myself and Alan to do a bit of sightseeing (inside of my eyelids 😴) before the 8pm boat home. Much to my delight, there was a sleeper cabin left, which gets a 5⭐️ review, meaning I could catch up on some sleep before the journey up the road.

Thanks to all the lads for another top job in the workshop and on the event.

Last weekend saw something a little different take place on the rally calendar. An event organised to celebrate the life of someone very well respected in Scottish rallying and beyond, Colin Christie, who sadly passed away earlier in the year. With that, the Be More Colin Superstage was created.

Paddy Munro and Andy Stevenson took part in the special event in the freshly rebuilt Es**rt after their off at the Snowman Rally earlier in the year. Eight short blasts around Cooper Park lay ahead—only 6.5 miles in fact. However, with Paddy at the wheel and all the high kerbs, it was a long day… thankfully no dramas this time! After a few “strategic” route options and some rev-limiter-abusing donuts (sorry Paul) on the last corner, the weekend was a success.

Another week, another rally.

This time we made the long trip over to the south of Ireland, to the town of Nenagh, for the Birr Stages.

Some of the lads set off for the boat first thing Friday morning, while Robbie and Mike took the “princess package” option, travelling in style on Ryanair’s finest early Saturday morning and returning Sunday night.

Two crews took on the fast, flowing stages: Gordon Morrison and Ashleigh Will in the Mk2 Es**rt, and Ross Hunter and Sean Douglas in the 208 Rally4.

Gordon and Ashleigh’s event went according to plan. A few moments here and there, struggling to get the car slowed down for some chicanes — never ideal looking out the side window coming into one — but luckily no damage. After losing some time on the last loop, with the stages drying out quicker than expected while on wets, they ended the day 25th overall.

Ross and Sean again had a relatively clean run. After being reseeded before the start, they were right in the mix of the Stellantis Rally Cup. Setting top-three times in a very competitive class for most of the day, things were looking good for a podium, only to be pipped at the post on the final stage, losing out on 3rd by three seconds. Still a fantastic result on their first time on these stages.

Rally done, and the long journey awaited — for myself, as everyone else was headed for home 🙄 A stopover in Maghera on Sunday night had me ready for Monday morning to re-prep Gordon’s car for Monaghan in two weeks’ time. Job done and the 19:30 boat booked on Monday night to get up the road, only to be met with a nice little detour due to a road closure… happy driver indeed 😤

That brings to an end a run of seven events over the last seven weekends. Definitely looking forward to a weekend off before it’s all go again.

As always, an absolute top job by all the lads in and out of the workshop. It has certainly been a fairly manic start to the year!

Next up on the list of events this month was a trip north to Forres for the Kinloss Spring Rally.

Just one car competing so it was a little bit calmer than recent weeks. Father and son duo Craig and Ian Macivor would be back out in their Honda Civic.
After “slightly touching” something with the front of the car on stage 1, a quick radiator change was needed by the lads. Then from then on every stage was full of commitment as always from Craig. Aiming to get the relatively standard Civic into the top 20 was the plan but they pair managed to bring the car home (with a few battle scars on it) to 10th o/a and 3rd in class.

Well, the weekend off came and went pretty quickly, and it was back to it!

The second round of the Scottish Rally Championship was upon us as we headed to St Boswells for the Border Counties Rally.

First of three crews taking part was Mike Stuart and Clare Fraser in the mighty Mk1 Es**rt at car 20, looking to continue on from their success at the Snowman Rally. Straight from the word go, it was clear to see there was going to be a great battle for the 2WD honours, with just seconds here and there splitting the top three. Their only real drama of the day was when there was no more steering lock left, which resulted in a bit of a spin.
After a nail-biting final stage, the pair came out on top, taking with it 7th O/A, 6th SRC, 1st 2WD, 1st in class and 1st challengers — all that by a mere one second! 😬

Craig Rutherford and Tom Hynd were seeded right behind at car 21, making for a busy service 🏃🏻‍♂️
Again looking to pick up where they left off with another clean run, they were setting great times and leading for most of the day. Things were looking good for the win until a throttle issue on the second last stage made a massive dent in their lead 😔 Another participant in that nail-biting final stage, but it wasn’t to be for the pair, losing out on the win by just one second. Still an absolutely fantastic result, and for both Es**rt crews to break into the top 10 for the second event in a row is brilliant. They took 8th O/A, 7th SRC, 2nd 2WD, 1st in class and 2nd challengers.

Robbie Wood and Steven Brown were back in their MG ZR S1600. Being Robbie’s home event, there’s always that bit of added pressure. Unfortunately, on the way to stage 1, the battery isolator failed 😔
Thankfully, after replacing the part, they were allowed to continue for the remainder of the stages and get the car to the finish.

Yet again, a massive thanks to all the lads in service and in the workshop in the lead-up to the event.

With the events coming at us thick and fast theres not been much rest over the last few weeks!

Across the water would see Gordon Morrison and Ian Parker take on the Mayo Stages in the Mk2 Es**rt. The First round of the National Tarmac Championship, based in the “wild west” town of Westport.
With the weather forecast not looking too great we knew it was going to be a tricky weekend, but i dont think anyone expected it to be as bad as it was, a boat would’ve probably been a better choice!
The pair were definitely kept on their toes with the stages being so tricky and after a slight overshoot on stage 2 it was all about just getting to the finish and with the cancellation of the last loop of stages due to accidents and safety concerns thats what they managed to do, 22nd o/a and 5th in class!

A lot closer to home was the Knockhill stages with Ross Hunter and Chris Dodds, back out after their great run at East Riding last weekend, in the 208 Rally4. A good day spent learning the car with setup changes at nearly every service. Proving to be very beneficial and managing to set consistent times all day to finish 4th o/a and 1st 2wd.

Another top job by all the lads to keep things running so smoothly!

Next up on the events list was the long trip south to the Yorkshire town of Beverley for the East Riding Stages.

Ross Hunter opting to take his Peugeot 208 Rally4 down to tackle the popular Yorkshire stages, alongside him was Chris Dodds.

After the long drawn out day that was Saturday the lads headed off into the 4 night time stages that lay ahead. Conditions weren’t exactly ideal and with each car pulling out mud on nearly every corner the stages were extremely slippy.
Sunday and daylight broke, even the sun made an appearance at one point! Keeping it neat and tidy all weekend, the only real struggle they had was the long straights which the wee Peugeot’s gearing was not enjoying! Sitting on the limiter for most of the day 😬
Still, they brought the car home 29th o/a and 4th in class.

Then time for the lads to head back up the road. “Quick” coffee break at the services, ending up helping a stricken motorist whose suspension had collapsed 🙄
