What is a DPF?
Even though they have been fitted to diesel cars in the UK since 2009, many people dont know what a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is or what it does!
As diesel burns differently to petrol, a lot of soot is produced as a by product of the combustion process. The soot is almost invisible but can be detrimental to both the environment and peoples health.
To combat this, manufacturers added DPF filters to trap and destroy the soot. It does this by using a filter in the exhaust system. The vehicle then performs a regeneration, or regen for short, on the DPF. To start the regeneration process, the exhaust gases need to get extremely hot which is achieved by driving for longer journeys. Unfortunately, in todays city living and short drives, the regeneration cant happen.
This then causes the build up of soot and eventually it will block the DPF completely causing engine problems.
If your unlucky, excess soot may have damaged the DPF beyond repair and it will need to be replaced, which can cost as much as £1500 - £3000 depending on your vehicle.
