🔧 What Is a Cam Belt and Why Is It So Important?
The cam belt (also called a timing belt) is a critical part of your engine. It keeps the crankshaft and camshaft perfectly synchronised, making sure the engine valves open and close at exactly the right time while the pistons move.
If the cam belt is worn, stretched or fails, that timing is lost. In many engines this causes the pistons and valves to collide, resulting in serious internal engine damage. This often means costly repairs or even a full engine replacement.
⚙️ Why peak condition matters:
• It runs constantly whenever the engine is on
• Rubber degrades over time, even at low mileage
• Oil contamination (especially on wet belts) accelerates wear
• Failure usually happens without warning
⚠️ Signs yours may need attention:
• Cracking or visible wear
• High mileage or unknown service history
• Manufacturer replacement interval is reached
That’s why cam belts are replaced based on age and mileage, not just visible condition. Keeping it in peak condition protects your engine and helps avoid major repair bills.
This photo shows a worn, cracked belt next to a new one. A simple check at the right time can save your engine. If you’re unsure, get it inspected before it fails.
