⚠️ BMW 4 SERIES | SOFTWARE RECOVERY ⚠️

This BMW 4 Series was recovered into us as a non-runner after breaking down shortly after a mobile technician had been out to “fix” a software issue and carry out a “retrofit”.

After carrying out diagnostics, we found the vehicle’s software had been corrupted across multiple control units, leaving us with quite a recovery job.

💻 Around 6 hours of programming and recovery work later, working from the vehicle’s gateway module through the affected control units, we managed to restore the vehicle back to the correct software state and get it back up and running again. ✅

Modern BMWs are heavily reliant on interconnected control units and software. Programming isn’t simply plugging in a laptop and pressing a button — using incorrect software, unsuitable interfaces or interrupted programming can very quickly turn a relatively simple job into a non-running vehicle.

There’s often a reason why somebody can offer programming or retrofits for next to nothing. Think carefully before trusting your vehicle to someone turning up with no dealer-level equipment, questionable software and a cheap diagnostic lead. Saving a few quid initially can become a very expensive recovery job.

At Jono’s Vehicle Solutions, we use genuine dealer-level diagnostic and programming equipment for BMW & MINI, including BMW ISTA, with the correct equipment and procedures for the vehicle.

This BMW 125D came in for brakes all round — and it’s fair to say they were definitely due! 😳

Once stripped down, we found the old brake pads had deteriorated and started falling apart, as you can see in the photos. A good reminder of why brake inspections and preventative maintenance are so important.

Not all tyres are created equal... 👀

I've had people tell me I'm talking rubbish when I explain how the wrong tyres can cause problems with transfer boxes, gearboxes and differentials. Unfortunately, I've seen the damage first-hand, and the repair bills aren't cheap.

This excellent video from explains exactly why using the correct manufacturer-approved tyres matters, especially on modern 4WD and xDrive vehicles.

Trying to save a few quid on tyres can end up costing thousands in drivetrain repairs. Sometimes the cheapest option becomes the most expensive.

Worth a watch if you own a BMW xDrive, Audi quattro, Mercedes 4MATIC, VW 4Motion or any other four-wheel-drive vehicle.

🔧 BMW 320D – From Multiple Faults to Fully Repaired 🔧

This BMW 320D arrived with a long list of issues including airbag, SOS, drivetrain and fuel supply faults, along with a very strong smell of diesel.

After carrying out a full diagnostic assessment, we traced each fault back to its root cause rather than simply clearing fault codes.

✅ Airbag control module found to have failed internally – replacement module sourced, programmed and coded to the vehicle.

✅ SOS fault traced to a failed telematics battery and was also linked to the airbag module fault.

✅ Fuel supply faults diagnosed to a failing low-pressure fuel pump that was unable to provide the required fuel pressure on demand – new pump fitted.

✅ Strong diesel smell traced to a failed fuel pressure/temperature sensor. This allowed diesel to travel up the wiring loom and into the engine ECU.

The ECU was carefully stripped, cleaned and repaired, damaged wiring was repaired, a new fuel line installed and everything extensively tested before being returned to the customer.

No unnecessary parts. No guesswork. Just proper diagnostics and repairs.

The result? Another BMW back on the road and performing exactly as it should. 🚗💨
