We have published the full report for the consultation on improving the rules for booking a driving test.

The outcome of the consultation means that:
- only learner drivers will be able to book and manage car driving tests
- learner drivers will be limited to making up to 2 changes to their test in total
- tests will only be able to be moved to driving test centres within a certain geographical area of the original booking

These changes will be introduced from spring 2026.

The DVSA are introducing some subtle but important updates to the practical driving test. 🚗

You may have seen that these changes have already been trialled at 20 driving test centres. During the trial, learners drove routes that included more high speed, rural roads where the location allowed. From 24 November 2025, the DVSA will roll these updates out to every driving test centre across Great Britain.

Along with increasing the time spent on higher speed roads, the DVSA is also:

✅ reducing the number of stops in the test from four to three
✅ lowering how often the emergency stop is carried out, from one in three tests to one in seven
✅ adding more flexibility to the independent driving section, allowing it to run for the full duration of the test

These changes aim to improve road safety by better reflecting real world driving conditions. They won’t affect the skills needed to pass the test.

👤 Do you know who you’re sat next to? 👤

That chilling moment when you slide into the driver’s seat and realise… is your instructor really who they say they are?

It’s scary but true: not every driving instructor is properly qualified or registered. Here’s how you can protect yourself:
- Always check the instructor’s badge in the windscreen. A fully qualified instructor will display a green octagonal badge; a trainee (PDI) will often show a pink triangular one.
- Use the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) online “Find your nearest driving instructors” tool to check their name and ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) number.
- If they’re charging you for lessons but aren’t on the register or won’t show you proof, that’s a massive red flag.
- Remember, all instructors who charge for car driving lessons must be either an ADI or a trainee PDI with a licence allowing them to teach.
