Business Update

Due to sudden changes in my personal circumstances, I have made the difficult decision to close my mobile mechanical and electrical diagnostics and repair business after nearly 9 years serving Tarbert and the surrounding areas.

I’m incredibly proud of what this business became — a trusted diagnostic resource for both private customers and established garages across Tarbert, Kintyre, and Mid Argyll with a reputation built through hard work, word of mouth, and tackling and repairing complex faults others couldn’t resolve.

Thank you sincerely to everyone who supported me over the years.
Further details regarding final arrangements will follow.

Over the past week and a half I have been mostly unreachable as I have been at my mum’s home in Glasgow where she was receiving palliative care. On Sunday night, she passed away peacefully after her short battle with terminal cancer, with my dad, sister, and me at her side.

My family and I would like to thank the nursing staff for the incredible care, compassion, and support they showed her and our family during this difficult time.

Due to the time of year being so close to Christmas and with my mum’s upcoming funeral, I have made the difficult decision to pause work and not accept any further bookings until the New Year. Thank you all so much for your patience, understanding, and kindness

BMW 5 series headlight fault, no angel eyes or dipped beam.
Water ingress into the NSF headlight ultimately damaged the led headlight module and main vehicle wiring harness. Further check of the OSF showed the same but this side was still working.
2 new genuine headlights with modules worked out cheaper than aftermarket variants.
Fitted and both modules programmed and coded to the vehicle with all lights now working.

When a heater blower not working is towbar related!
This fault was a complete surprise and took me a few hours to find, but using correct diagnostic procedures, wiring diagrams and schematics and also using a automotive oscilloscope I was able to trace the problem exactly to the cause.
Complaint was no blower motor operation on all 4 speeds, you would think either a fuse, switch or the motor itself, but not on this vehicle.
A burnt out towbar module, yes a towbar issue stopped the heater blower working.
Due to water ingress into the towbar module this was bringing down the Can-Bus network, the same network the heater module uses to communicate on.
This had the impact of causing the heater control module to fail to work all together.
Wiring connections cleaned and a new module fitted, job done.

Over the last few months, I have noticed that I have had multiple customers old and new who did not know that I also do general and running repairs including vehicle servicing and that they only thought I did electrical diagnosis and electrical repairs.

So, I thought I would make a post to clarify things, although I specialise in electrical problems, electrical fault finding and in-depth diagnosis, my automotive background started at the age of 15, where I served a 4-year mechanic apprenticeship with a Rover dealership in the Partick area of Glasgow, (Macharg, Rennie & Lindsay). This dealership supplied vehicles from Rover/MG/LDV/Leyland/Land Rover/Austin and the original Mini.

After I served my time, I moved on to work as a mechanic at a Ford dealer in the Temple/Anniesland area of Glasgow, (Premier Ford), this did not last long, approximately 8 months, as the Ford dealer went into administration and closed down.

I then secured a mechanic position with to a multi franchise main dealership again in the Hyndland area of Glasgow's west end working on Daihatsu, Mazda, Kia and Skoda, (Hyndland Motors).

I eventually moved on to start working at a brand-new Toyota dealership in Bishopbriggs in the north of Glasgow (Arnold Clark), where I spent over 10 years working my way up from mechanic to become a Toyota master technician and workshop chargehand but I also assisted the workshop foreman and service manager with other areas of the business.
Working with Toyota is where I refined a lot of my diagnostic skills though manufacturer and employer training, including gaining knowledge, experience and certification for working on Hybrids and EVs.

While working for Arnold Clark I took on extra roles specifically working evenings/nights and over weekends on a rotational basis to do vehicle roadside breakdowns and vehicle recovery including accident recovery.

Finally, I worked at Mercedes Benz of Glasgow as a Pro Technician prior to moving to Argyll.

Although working mainly in main dealerships for the respective brands I was fortunate enough to work on all makes and models and not just brand specific vehicles with these dealerships.

I started AVT in the January of 2018 and it will soon be my 9th year of operation, and I have become busier each year, not just with my own work load and customers but also with assisting other repairers in the Kintyre and Mid-Argyll areas with problematic issues on vehicles that require my skills to be put to use, wither that’s just basic or advanced diagnosis of problems, programming and coding of new modules and components or restoring factory software into vehicles that have had software deletes, which the main reason for this is the deletion of emissions controls components and systems, such as DPFs, EGRs and AdBlue systems.

In all I have over 25 year’s experience in the automotive industry, so if you need anything vehicle related wither it’s just servicing, general and running repairs right though to in-depth diagnostics and electrical fault finding, please get in touch.

This has got to be one of the best tools I have purchased so far! I have had it a while but only just got a chance to use it, a portable induction heater.
I can run this tool straight from my van via the onboard lithium based 240v system.
Complete mobile workshop in a van.

Ford Focus intermittent electronic steering lock issues and it turns out its ABS related.
After an initial diagnostic assessment including checking live data and other items it was at this point i got a clue to the cause of the fault.
Access to the Ford technical portal was gained for wiring schematics and operation principles to confirm my suspicions.
I then contacted the customer to query if he had any recent work done on the ABS system, to which he said that the vehicle was at another repairer for a new ABS sensor recently and the steering lock fault happened as soon as he collected the vehicle.
Turns out the other repairer did not clear the ABS code history after the sensor was replaced and i have no idea why they would not do this or did not do this to confirm the repair was completed.
This has then caused the electronic steering lock to play up.
Looking further into the fault, the replacement ABS sensor fitted by the other repairer to the rear left wheel looks like it is possibly of poor quality and is giving a poor waveform signal which is inconsistent with the other wheel speed sensors.
The customer was advised to go back to the original repairer as this has already cost him another diagnostic fee for an issue caused by the other repairer.
