Swindon Young Drivers

Swindon Young Drivers Providing 1-2-1 training for under 17's in a safe, off road enviroment. Using fully qualified driver coaches and modern dual control cars.

We are a group of Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs) who are passionate about road safety. We believe that early education will help to improve safety on our roads. So we provide driving training to under 17 year olds, in order to better prepare them for when they take to the roads at 17. We also provide associated road safety training to everyone who attends our sessions, including things like f

irst aid. And in 2017 we became a charity, so hopefully this will help us spread our road safety message even further!

ANNOUNCEMENT

It is with great sadness that we have to announce that Swindon Young Drivers will not be reopening. This is mainly due to the difficulty in finding another venue that matched up to the Wroughton Park & Ride. We were very fortunate to have this resource.

It is also due to us losing several of our instructors for various reasons. SYD worked so well because of the fantastic young drivers and their families, but also the dedicated instructors wanting to improve road safety. Without them we could not make it as good as it was.

We would all like to thank every young driver and their families for making SYD so successful, as well as a lot of fun. We hope that you'll remember all the good things you learned from us, and be safe out there in the road for a long time to come.

Happy safe driving!

ANNOUNCEMENT: With great disappointment, we were recently informed by SBC that the Wroughton Park & Ride will no longer be available to us (see the response below). This means that SYD is currently homeless, however we are looking for a new site, and as soon as we have any news we will share it with you. So, if any of you have any ideas for a new venue, we would love to hear from you!

04/04/2022

PLEASE NOTE, the recent story in the Adver was about Vauxhall Young Driver and not us, Swindon Young Drivers. It appears that the Covid testing station in Wroughton Park & Ride is being dismantled, and we have approached SBC to hopefully resume as soon as possible. We will keep you all updated as soon as we learn any more news!

29/04/2021

UPDATE: Driving instructors have been allowed back to work now, however SYD remains closed at present. This is due to our regular site still being used as a Covid testing station. Currently we do not have a date when it will be free. We have been trying to source another site, however finding somewhere that satisfies our regular safety and insurance requirements, as well as Covid safe directives is proving very difficult.
As soon as we have further information about a start date, we will communicate it. We are all eager to get going again, so watch this space as we will be shouting long and loud when we are going to start up!
Thanks you to everyone for your patience, and we look forward to welcoming young drivers back soon!

UPDATE: the refunds have been a little delayed, due to the impending lockdown. With the announcement over the weekend, us self employed driving instructors have been left in the air as to whether we are going to be able to work or not come Thursday. So the weekend was spent business planning for the worst. Hopefully we will be told today, and then we go from there. Thank you for your continuing patience.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SWINDON YOUNG DRIVERS

Due to the ongoing situation with Coronavirus, we have taken the difficult decision to put Swindon Young Drivers on hold at the current time.

You may be aware that our regular location at the Wroughton Park & Ride is currently being used as the Covid testing station for Swindon. We have been looking at other locations to get SYD back up and running which would be suitable and safe. But with this challenge, as well as the current measures introduced to combat the pandemic, we have decided that we cannot sufficiently ensure the safety of our instructors, staff, young drivers and all their friends & families.

But rest assured, SYD is not closing down – we will be monitoring the situation closely, and will be reopening as soon as we can safely do so.

So for everyone that currently has a prepaid lesson waiting to be taken, we will be contacting you in the coming weeks to arrange a refund. And for any young driver turning 17 before we get going again, if you are wanting regular lessons on the road with your SYD instructor please let us know and we’ll get that instructor to get in touch.

We will be updating our website and page with as much information as we can, as often as we can. Watch out for these updates, and you can always contact us if you have any questions or comments.

It’s a frustrating time, and we’re really disappointed that we have to follow this course of action, but we’re looking forward to getting back to doing what we do best as soon as we can.

Stay safe.

NEWSFLASH! We are carrying out risk assessment at the moment regarding running a SYD session for September. Details to be confirmed soon, so watch this space!

17/06/2020

Hi Everybody,

We hope that you’re all doing well and coping with the ongoing situation with Coronavirus. Things appear to be getting better, so hopefully that will continue.

As far as SYD is concerned, we are monitoring the situation closely. Given that we are all qualified instructors, much of the guidance is coming from the DVSA and our associations. Currently driving instructors should only be giving lessons to key workers with an emergency test booked. So SYD remains on hold at present.

You may have seen other under 17 schemes talking about restarting in July. Please note these are all provisional based on Government guidance at the time, and may not actually happen. We have taken the view that until we are given the go ahead to resume normal driving lessons, then under 17 lessons should also be put on hold. But we are working on starting up again as soon as possible.

We are putting together procedures to make SYD Covid safe for when we do restart, and details of these will be available before the first session back. Our goal is to ensure the maximum amount of safety for our young drivers and their families, as well as everybody at SYD and their families.

So everyone at SYD is looking forward to seeing you all as soon as possible, and as safely as possible. Look out for an announcement about our first session date, hopefully soon!

01/06/2020

Hello everybody, it's been a little while since we've been in touch, so we thought we'd let you know that we are still here and looking to get SYD back up and running as soon as is possible. We are constantly monitoring the latest advice regarding the Coronavirus, and whilst things look to be improving, we are still not in a position to announce our next event. The safety of our young drivers, their friends and families, and our instructors and their families is paramount.

But please be assured that when we do get the green light, we'll sort out sessions for those of you who have prepaid for sessions, as well as those who are eager to come back.

And if there is anything you need to know from us, do drop us a message.

Take care, and stay safe!

28/04/2020

We work with our partners to highlight the dangers on our roads.

09/04/2020

Despite test centres being closed, third party sites on the internet are still offering to book tests or apply for provisional licences on your behalf, for a fee………

The third party sites cannot actually process the bookings or applications until DVSA/DVLA reopen and there does not seem to be any notification on these third party sites to tell applicants that DVSA/DVLA are currently closed; reports are coming through that they are continuing to accept applications and take money to do this.

Please talk to your instructor if you are thinking of applying for a provisional licence or bookings a test BEFORE you do anything.

13/03/2020

Given the way that the Coronavirus situation has developed since our last notification, we have now taken the difficult decision to postpone the SYD meeting on Sunday 29 March.

For those that have already booked, we will automatically book you the same session on the new date, alternatively we can offer a full refund or gift voucher to use at a later date. Unfortunately we are unable to confirm the date of the next session at this time, however we will be constantly assessing the situation, and planning future events, so that when Coronavirus is no longer a problem we will carry on.

If you have any questions, please message us.

Thank you.
