MOT to SORN: How to get your car out of lockdown.
Unless you are a key worker, you probably haven't used your car much over the past four months.
Due to coronavirus, in March the government allowed drivers who were scheduled for a MOT test to delay it for up to six months.
That has changed and now mandatory MOTs for vehicles in England, Scotland and Wales are being reintroduced from 1 August.
Here are five tips to help you get your car out of lockdown:
1) Check your tyre pressure before you start driving.
2) Check your lights are working properly – they might need cleaning.
3) If you haven’t driven in an while the brakes could have seized. Turn your car on and move it back and forth a few times to loosen your brakes.
4) If your MOT is due before 1st August 2020 you have got a 6 month extension but get it now if you can as a rush in September could lead to waiting lists.
5) Have you had a reminder letter for your car tax? Remember you cannot tax your car unless you have a valid MOT certificate.
If you decided to SORN your vehicle during lockdown, ie you registered it as off-road, and you want to take it back out on the road, you'll need a valid MOT certificate and insurance. Then you can apply for tax using your V5C.
