A turbo uses waste energy from the exhaust gases to force more air into the engine.
Exhaust gases spin the turbine wheel
Exhaust leaving the engine passes through the hot side of the turbo and spins the turbine at extremely high speed.
The turbine drives the compressor
The turbine and compressor wheels are connected by a common shaft, so they rotate together.
The compressor draws in fresh air
The compressor wheel pulls air through the air filter, compresses it and sends it toward the engine.
The intercooler cools the compressed air
Compressing air makes it hot. The intercooler cools it, making it denser and allowing more oxygen into each cylinder.
More air allows more fuel to be burned
The ECU adds the appropriate amount of fuel, producing more torque and power than the same engine could naturally aspirated.
On the turbo shown, the electronic actuator controls variable vanes around the turbine:
At low engine speed, the vanes narrow the gas passage to speed up exhaust flow and help the turbo spool quickly.
At higher speed and load, they open to control boost and prevent excessive turbine speed or pressure.
The centre housing receives engine oil to lubricate and cool the shaft and bearings. A restricted oil feed, blocked drain, contaminated oil or shutting down after severe use can damage the bearings and seals.
One important point: a turbo does not instantly create boost just because the engine is revving. It needs sufficient exhaust-gas energy and engine load, which is why meaningful boost testing should normally be done under load rather than by revving the vehicle while stationary.
