With safety on the roads on the decline should Great Britain take the same actions as Northern Ireland?

Key Changes in Northern Ireland (From 1 October 2026)

• Minimum Learning Period: Learner drivers must wait at least six months after getting their provisional licence before they can take their practical driving test.

• Structured Training & Logbook: Learners must complete mandatory training modules tracked via a logbook or app, signed off by an approved driving instructor or supervising driver.

• Extended Restricted Period: The post-test restricted phase increases from 12 months to 24 months.

• Nighttime Passenger Restrictions: Newly qualified drivers under the age of 24 face restrictions on carrying young passengers (aged 14–20) between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM for their first six months, with exemptions for family members.

• Removal of the 45mph Limit: The old rule capping new R-plate drivers at 45mph has been removed, allowing new drivers to match normal road speeds.

• Updated Plates: The red "R" plates are being replaced with a new blue plate system spanning the 24-month period.

• Transition Rules: Learners who held a provisional licence or started lessons before 1 October 2026 have until the end of March 2027 to pass under the old system if they wish to avoid the GDL framework.

Struggle to figure out what’s going on approaching a roundabout?

You might be approaching too fast!

This explains how approaching slower will increase your thinking time, and make it safer for you and other road users.
