We don’t just repair classic Mercedes-Benz gearboxes. We rebuild and remanufacture them properly, in-house.

Over the years we have built one of the largest collections of fully refurbished classic Mercedes-Benz automatic gearboxes anywhere, including rare and unusual variants. Some are rebuilt to order, some are rebuilt for stock, but all are restored carefully back to original factory specification by our in-house gearbox specialists. Every gearbox begins with a full strip and detailed assessment. Each component is cleaned, inspected and measured against original factory tolerances. Any worn components are replaced or remanufactured, operating clearances are reset to Mercedes-Benz specifications, and every unit is rebuilt using genuine seals, gaskets and service parts.

This is meticulous work that requires patience, experience and deep understanding of how these transmissions were originally engineered. Many of our gearbox specialists began their apprenticeships when these units were still in production at Mercedes-Benz, making them some of the few remaining people with original training and experience on these transmissions.

All mechanical machines have a lifespan and require maintenance, yet gearboxes are often overlooked when maintaining classic cars. Engines are serviced regularly, but gearboxes are frequently left untouched for decades. When rebuilt correctly, however, they completely transform how a classic SL drives, smoother changes, quieter operation and the relaxed driving experience these cars were designed to deliver.

Our mission has always been to ensure we can support every classic Mercedes-Benz SL on the road, which is why we continue to rebuild, remanufacture and stock these gearboxes for customers all over the world.

This late-production, November 1972 example represents one of the final units built. Remaining largely original and unrestored, it boasts an impressive provenance including two magazine features, a complete history of previous keepers, and single ownership since 1994. It comes accompanied by its complete owner’s wallet, the original service booklet detailing twelve Mercedes-Benz services from the 1970s, MOT certificates dating back to 1979, and handwritten notes alongside servicing invoices spanning the 1980s to the present day. Mechanically and cosmetically, the vehicle has been thoroughly maintained over the decades, supported by key historical repairs including a 1980s brake and suspension overhaul, a gearbox rebuild, fuel injection pump service, radiator restoration, prop shaft renovation, and various electrical and engine updates. It underwent a major body and mechanical overhaul in the early 2000s, followed by nearly €27,000 worth of work by Mercedes in Germany in 2017. Recent highlights include a modern Kenwood DAB stereo, a retrimmed centre console, and over £9,000 spent on a starter motor, front brakes, coolant hoses, and running gear, with continuous maintenance and special storage records documented up through 2025.

Underneath this cover is our latest R107 commission for a customer from Southeast Asia, he chose from a selection of our Sportline upgrades. Now complete, finished in Light Ivory over Brazil Brown.

Underneath, we’ve fitted our SLSHOP SportLine uprated suspension with height-adjustable springs. We’ve also fitted our SLSHOP SportLine uprated anti-roll bars, front and rear. This will allow us to set the correct height, sharpen the control, and give the car a more confident feel on the road.

But crucially, it still has to feel like a R107. Comfortable, composed, and capable of covering some serious miles.

The original mechanical fuel injection system from the 1980s has been completely replaced by a modern electronic fuel injection system and a mappable ECU. This allows us to control the fuelling, control the ignition, and allows the rebuilt V8 to give us much stronger drivability. We’ve also fitted a fully stainless steel exhaust system. It also has genuine AMG split-rim alloys.

Black detailing, chrome bumpers, and the full Brazil Brown leather interior really completes the look. And that’s important, because SportLine isn’t about adding things for the sake of it. It’s about making sure that every change improves the way the car looks, feels, and drives.

That’s what we’ve spent years at SLSHOP developing. A R107 with more control, more response, and more usability. Without losing the characteristics that make it so great.

We are also looking for complete 280 SL Pagoda donor vehicles in both right-hand drive and left-hand drive. In addition, we are keen to source excellent examples of the R129 SL.
