Ultra low emission vehicles (ULEVs) emit less than 75g of C02/km from their tailpipe, using low carbon technologies. They range from pure electric vehicles to extended range electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. As a result of this they qualify for the Plug-in Car Grant, a government incentive to encourage drivers to make the switch to electric vehicles.

These vehicles use electricity or hydrogen to power their electric motor, with batteries used as an energy storage device. These batteries are typically charged using an EV chargepoint, however the vehicles that use hydrogen can be refuelled at dedicated refueling stations much like you would refill a diesel or petrol vehicle.

It is often thought that electric vehicles cannot tow or be towed, due to limitations from being an electric vehicle. This is untrue.

Like all cars, electric vehicles must be “type approved” to tow a trailer or caravan, with an increasing number of electric vehicles launching with this as a part of their capability.

If an EV is towed at high speeds or for a long distance, it is required by many manufacturers that they must be towed with their wheels off of the ground. This is also the case for their fuel-based counterparts, so this is not an issue unique to electric vehicles.

Just like a fuel-powered car, if an EV breaks down and is in a dangerous spot such as a busy road, it can be towed to another location where it can await further assistance safely.

Electric vehicles are continuing to grow in popularity, with over 10 million EVs in use across the globe. Although this number is impressive and does suggest continued growth, it only accounts for 0.7% of vehicles on roads around the world. However, this percentage is expected to increase to 7% by 2030. While those numbers might sound humble, last year global sales of EVs grew by 160% compared to sales from the previous year.

In the UK specifically, 10.7% of vehicles are plug-in cars. There are 345,000 pure electric cars on our roads and 675,000 hybrid cars in use. With these encouraging statistics, and as the market continues to expand, it is most definitely the right time to make the switch to electric.

A common misconception about electric vehicles is that they break down more often than their fuel counterparts - this is not true.

Due to the fact that electric vehicles have fewer moving parts, they actually break down less than combustion vehicles. As a result of this they require less maintenance, less fluids and have longer-lasting brake systems.

The AA revealed that in a survey of 15,000 people, 99% of those surveyed exaggerated the number of times they would break down from running out of charge. They went on to say it’s closer to 4% and that 50% of those breakdowns weren’t actually out of charge. They were actually low on charge and merely concerned about running out. They also noted that the main reasons they were called out to assist EVs were exactly the same as more conventional cars.
