£34,271 raised for Comic Relief 👏

Yesterday we supported our friends TK Maxx (part of TJX) in delivering a charity golf day at Greenway Hall Golf Club & Driving Range, bringing together 22 teams (88 players) for a fantastic and fun day of golf, challenges, and fundraising.

From Trackman nearest-the-pin on Hole 19 to the putting competition on Hole 20 (and even a few hidden Winnie the Pooh characters around the course), there was plenty going on throughout the day.

The event finished at the Fairway event hall with a two-course meal, fundraising activities and prize presentations.

Huge credit to the TK Maxx team for driving the event, and to everyone who took part, donated, and supported the day.

Here's another interesting set of photos we've dug out of the archives.

The historical records aren't detailed but we estimate that these were built in the late 1990's for Whitbread before the brand was absorbed into Anheuser-Busch InBev.

This is a double deck trailer on twin tyres fitted with 3 revolving deck modules but weirdly, you can also spot some very early removable side support posts, designed to be as lightweight as possible.

How exactly are you meant to secure 120+ cubic metres of load on a double deck?

Roof mounted straps? Side nets? Bungee? Kites?

We know a lot depends on weight, body type, compressibility and stability but we'd love to hear what you think is the most effective system for both lower and upper decks.

Thinking about electric tractor units? Payload is worth checking carefully.

Operators considering electric tractors will already be aware that battery packs add significant mass compared with conventional diesel tractors.

UK regulations recognise this. The Road Vehicles (Authorised Weight) (Amendment) Regulations 2023 allow up to 2 tonnes additional maximum authorised weight for zero-emission HGVs to help offset the weight of battery systems.

However, electric tractor unit weights vary considerably between manufacturers and battery configurations. In some cases the additional tractor weight can still reduce the payload available within the plated gross vehicle weight of the combination, even with the regulatory allowance.

For weight-critical operations this may influence vehicle specification, route planning and load density.

How high are diesel prices likely to reach?

Since the Iran conflict escalated at the end of February, UK bulk diesel prices have already risen sharply as disruption to global oil supply feeds into the fuel market.

Yesterday’s price for B7 bulk diesel stood at 129.39ppl, and operators across the sector are now watching closely to see how far prices might climb.

The last major energy shock during the Ukraine war pushed UK bulk diesel prices to around 162ppl in June 2022 — the highest level seen in the past two decades.

Looking back at the longer-term data shows how quickly global events can drive fuel costs higher and why geopolitical shocks tend to translate rapidly into higher operating costs for transport operators.
