So, this BMW 1150RT came in from another bike garage where they stated that they could not remove the oil filter having tried out most known methods including the screw driver straight through the filter canister. After having a quick try it was obvious that the filter body was just rotating and not undoing at all. At this point I had little idea why, perhaps the oil feed had become loose and was just rotating! If that was the case then the whole lot would have to be stripped down in order to gain access to it. Spoke with the customer who had just purchased the bike and gave him some options. Clearly he did not want the expense of striping so we went with option two. On these earlier BM's the oil filter is recessed within the finned engine castings so I decided to trim part of the casting away so that I could have a better look. I was then able to see that the canister body was turning but not the top crimped ring. So I was left with no choice other than to cut the casting away sufficiently to reveal the crimp ring portion at the top of the filter. I was then able to use a small cold chisel to drive the top portion of the oil filter round and, hey presto, out it came. Finally, I then profiled the finned casting into a smooth curved surface which did not look out of place. Newer BM's do not have this type of casting now.

Managed to get the RC30 wheel vapour blasted and powder coated, just the RD500 wheels to do the same with now.

Headstock bearing replacement, unfortunately replacement bearing only come with a minimal amount of grease on them from the factory nowadays, I'm sure this is just to prevent corrosion during storage and transportation. Therefore, if you're having bearings replaced insist that the shop packs them correctly as we always do at Foley's.

Customer rang up yesterday and stated that his MX bike would not turn over. Solution, remove the engine from the frame and bring it in and we'll have a look. I think it's time for a replacement unit, lol.

1970's Kawasaki H2 750 L/H handlebar mount mounting stud bent after the bike was dropped. Mounts no longer available. Solution, turn a new one. I bored out the alloy mount to a larger diameter, smelted an alloy welding rod and very carefully poured into the alloy body whilst ensuing the stud was held vertically in the mount body. After cooling I placed the whole assembly back in the lathe in order to turn down and remove the excess alloy. Nice little engineering job if I say so myself.

1980's Kawasaki 750. Three of the engine mounts on the engine itself had broken away. Sufficient aluminium welding carried out by DEAN at DT Metallics left us with having to line bore the mountings after positioning the engine in the frame . A nice little engineering job completed, now for further restoration :-)
