Whats happening at Specialist Cars and Harris Motor Co!
I genuinely don’t know where the year is going — it’s hard to believe we’re already nearing the end of March!
Here’s a quick update from Specialist Cars and Harris Motor Company. It’s been a strong start to the year overall, with a slight slowdown in February followed by a very, very busy March.

Why checking your engine oil really matters

Sadly, last week one customer found out the hard way just how important engine oil is. She called us after the engine oil warning light came on and the car had started making a funny noise. We explained straight away that this could be serious. She topped up the oil and booked the car in with us for a service, although we had not serviced this vehicle before.

We carried out an interim service, including an oil and filter change. At the time, everything seemed fine, but we did make it clear that the damage may already have been done. Around two weeks later, the car was recovered back to us because the engine would start but would not rev properly. On inspection, the timing chain had slipped — and sadly that was the end of the engine. In this case, the vehicle was uneconomical to repair.

Why regular oil checks are so important

Engine oil lubricates vital components and helps prevent wear inside the engine

Low oil level can quickly cause serious damage

Warning lights should never be ignored

Unusual noises can be an early sign of engine failure

Topping up the oil may help temporarily, but it cannot undo damage already caused

Even low-mileage vehicles still need annual oil and filter changes

Using the correct grade of oil is essential for the specific engine

Our advice

Check your engine oil level regularly

Don’t wait for a warning light to appear

Have your oil and filter changed annually, even if you only cover a few thousand miles a year

Always make sure the correct oil is used for your vehicle

This customer really took the time to tell us what he thought — and that always makes our day.

He was new to us and wasn’t quite sure what was wrong with his car, but booked in for an MOT and service. After inspection, we found his sticking gears were down to a worn-out clutch. We explained everything clearly, provided a full estimate, and got the work completed the very same day. Although he collected the car the next morning, it was ready and waiting for him.
