Arcangel is a 70-foot traditional stern, all steel narrow boat originally built as an unpowered day boat to be worked around the Birmingham Canal Navigations for Hickmans. She has since had much work completed including a new counter stern, cabin, steel under cloth conversion, engine, footings, base plate and full fitout. Layout from entering through the cratch area at the front of the boat comprises of double bedroom. Following this is the open plan saloon. Next comes the galley with Rayburn which heats radiators and a calorifier for hot water, washing machine, stainless steel sink and drainer and ample storage space. The walk-through bathroom follows with full size bath and shower over, vanity basin and Porta Potti toilet. Following this is the engine room which houses the electric and mechanical components. At the rear of the boat is the back cabin decorated in traditional style with roses and castles and wood affect graining. Wood floor fitted throughout. She is powered by a Lister HA2 marine diesel engine with Lister Blackstone gearbox. Arcangel has been used a liveaboard and is suitable for extended cruising. Current Boat Safety Certificate until June 2028. Last docked and blacked June 2024. A documented history can be viewed at our office or emailed upon request.

Have you seen horse boat NORTHWICH on hard standing here at Norbury Wharf Ltd?

NORTHWICH was built in 1898 by Fellows, Morton and Clayton at Saltley in Birmingham as a horse boat and operated with them until taken over by the newly formed British Waterways Board in 1949. She was withdrawn from service in 1963 and put on display at the Waterways Museum at Stoke Bruerne. Having been identified as one of the oldest vessels on Britain’s canal system, she was initially displayed afloat, restored to her original colour scheme. In 1973 she had a refit which included completely replacing her bottom, again with elm bottom boards. In 1980, she had a rebuild which included rebottoming her with steel plate and much work on her superstructure with the object of reducing maintenance. Thereafter she toured the canal system as a roving exhibit at times with the FMC steamer PRESIDENT, spending time on loan to The Boat Museum, Ellesmere Port and the Black Country Museum. She was then based at the National Waterways Museum at Gloucester. She has recently been transferred from CRT ownership to the London Canal Museum and she is here at Norbury Wharf for a full restoration before being used as a floating exhibit in London. The project is expected to take about 12 months.

No fear – there’s water here!

Following reports of drought and water shortages on our inland waterways, a boat yard in Staffordshire is pleased to report that there is water and all the locks are operational on the Shropshire Union main line.

The Shropshire Union Canal is predominantly fed by clean water exiting from Barnhurst Sewage works in Wolverhampton and Belvide reservoir on the A5 at Stretton, Staffordshire. Therefore, as long as the good people in Wolverhampton keep flushing the toilet, water will continue to flow along the Shropshire Union main line towards Ellesmere Port!

There are some low water levels on the long pound between Hack Green and Bunbury (through Nantwich), but this is being carefully managed by the Canal & River Trust who have responsibility for maintaining the canal.

Managing Director; David Ray, says that “we are receiving multiple calls on a daily basis [from our hirers] asking if their holidays will still go ahead”, David has assured his customer’s that there are still plenty of routes to enjoy from his base at Norbury Junction on the beautiful Shropshire Union Canal.

Routes from Norbury include Chester (the walled city), Ellesmere Port (National Waterways Museum), Great Haywood (Shugborough Hall), Kinver (Rock houses), Kidderminster (Severn Valley Railway) and Stourport (River Severn). Of course for a short break there are more local routes that can be enjoyed along with a good range of canal side pubs and local villages.

David continues to add "we advise all our hirers [and private boat owners] to sign up to the stoppage notice system published by Canal & River Trust which gives the most up-to-date information, to avoid any inconvenience whilst cruising. As a small Company we want everyone to enjoy their holiday with us, so we are happy to help with route planning...".

Norbury Wharf still has some limited availability for the hire of boats during the summer holidays. They offer a range of boats from 2 to 10 berth and from 3 or 4 nights to 7, 10 and 14 nights – longer cruises are also available.

That’s D’riculous is a 57 foot cruiser stern narrow boat built by Narrowboats of Staffordshire in 2011 and fitted out by Mick Dalby. She is powered by a Vetus 4.17 marine diesel engine with Hurth gearbox located under the spacious cruiser deck at the rear. This boat benefits from being a reverse layout. Therefore the fully fitted galley is at the stern of the boat with stainless steel sink/drainer, Stoves DIT500 full sized gas cooker, 240v under counter fridge/freezer, washing machine and ample worktop and storage space. Moving forwards is the open plan saloon/dinette with Morso Squirrel solid fuel stove, two leather captain chairs, dinette which converts into a single berth and large bulkhead mounted television. Following this the walk through shower room, with full height quadrant shower, vanity basin and separator (compost) toilet. At the front of the cabin is the double bedroom with extendable bed and ample storage. Doors lead out onto the front well deck. That’s D’riculous has been used as a comfortable liveaboard and benefits from solar panels along with a regular maintenance regime. Boat Safety Certificate until May 2027. Last dry docked and blacked with International Intertuf 16 in July 2024. She is now looking for her next owner who can enjoy her as much as the vendors have.
