The Department for Transport recently published the final road casualty statistics for 2025 - revealing that 29,918 people were killed or seriously injured in crashes in Britain last year, a 4% increase compared with 2024.

Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists make up more than half (56%) of deaths and serious injuries, a disproportionately large number when factoring in their share of traffic.

This news brings into sharp focus that vulnerable road users deserve better protections when they travel, and that they pay the greatest price when collisions happen. For Road Safety Week 2026 we're shining a light on the roles of different road users, and how we must all work together to protect ourselves and those that we share the road with.

Although we each have a role to play, those with the potential to do the most harm have a greater responsibility to protect vulnerable road users. Throughout our November campaign, we will explore this issue, sharing important messages and highlighting active ways to make a difference.

Learning to drive? Make sure you know how to navigate rural roads. πŸŒ³πŸš—

Last year we made some minor changes to the driving test to make it more reflective of the everyday conditions motorists face.

This means you may spend more time on higher speed, higher risk roads β€” such as rural roads β€” while on your driving test, where location allows.

If you're a learner, make sure you practise driving on a variety of roads, not just town centres and dual carriageways. If you're supervising a learner, it's worth brushing up on your knowledge and skills too.

These roads present real challenges that need to be learned, not just guessed at. βœ…

Today marks 30 years of the theory test. πŸŽ‰

On 1 July 1996, a separate written theory test was introduced, replacing Highway Code questions that had previously been asked during the practical driving test. πŸ“

3 decades on, it remains a vital part of the driver testing and training regime and makes sure that people have the theory they need to drive safely and responsibly. βœ…

Every year in Britain, 4,740 people are killed or seriously injured in a crash involving a young driver aged 17–24. Evidence from other countries supports a stronger licensing system to help prevent these crashes and save lives. But what does stronger licensing mean? And is Britain ready for change?

In the spring we published our latest report exploring young driver safety and the licensing system in Britain. Our research revealed widespread public support for change. More than three-quarters (77%) of people support changes to the driver licensing system to reduce the numbers of people killed or seriously injured in crashes involving young drivers.
