Southampton Hydro Team

We are a group of students from the University of Southampton who aim to design and build an autonomous boat that will travel unaided across the Atlantic.

Our aim is to design, build and race an electrically-powered boat in Switzerland. We will be competing with the best engineering universities in the world during the Hydrocontest 2017. Our goals go beyond winning the race prizes, we endeavour do develop new ideas of commercial significance, to raise the awareness of the general public to the maritime challenges and to inspire the younger generation by interacting with them through various outreach activities.

Hydro Team went to Gosport's RC Yacht Lake last weekend to test their challenger boat for the Microtransat competition. Expectations were high, and the boat delivered.

After a slow start on the water, we tested the propulsion, steering and navigation systems. Although we take a very positive balance home, we still have to work hard to improve the GPS and the overall reliability of the vessel to resist the harsh conditions of the atlantic.

The construction of our Transatlantic Autonomous Vessel is underway!

Over the past month, our team has been working hard to design major components and build the deck of our boat. We are on schedule and are all very impatient to start on-water testing after the end of our exams.

Hello everyone! At the end of last year we discovered that the Hydrocontest had been cancelled for the foreseeable future due to reasons beyond our control.
Although we were disappointed by this news, we do not intend to stop! The team has voted to take on an exciting new two-year project whose goal is to design and manufacture an autonomous vessel capable of crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
We will soon post more information about the project, and we look forward to keeping you informed of our progress!
