Look what came through the locks today!

We had a rather special pair of visitors passing through Calcutt — motor boat ‘Nuneaton’ and butty ‘Brighton’, currently under the care of Narrow Boat Trust.

The Trust gives members of the general public the opportunity to experience these historic working boats loaded and in full working trim, keeping the traditions of the working waterways alive. ⚓️

It was fantastic to see them making their way through the locks today!

🔧 MAINTENANCE MONDAY | When Did You Last Check Your Bilge? 👀

It's not the most glamorous job on the boat... but your bilge deserves some attention!

Have a look underneath your floorboards and check for:

💧 Unwanted water
🛢️ Oil or fuel contamination
🔧 Loose or leaking fittings
⚙️ Problems with pumps or hoses
🧹 Dirt and debris

Finding water in your bilge doesn't necessarily mean there's a major problem — but finding out where it's coming from is important.

Make checking your bilge part of your regular boat maintenance routine.👍

Hats off to Maria and Gary, who successfully completed their RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman course with us last weekend! 🎉

And what a weekend to put their skills to the test: driving rain and blustery winds on day one, followed by glorious sunshine on day two. A proper taste of British boating!

As divers, they’re no strangers to the water, but this was their first full immersion in narrowboating—and they’re certainly diving in wholeheartedly. Having just bought a 70ft narrowboat to live aboard year-round, they’ve an exciting new chapter ahead. It was a pleasure to help them build the skills and confidence to get underway.

Joining their certificate photo is the slightly ghostly Doug Jnr, our ever-resilient man-overboard volunteer. Rescued from Calcutt marina by countless students this year, Doug remains remarkably cheerful about being thrown in again! 🛟

Whether you’re starting your own narrowboat adventure, looking to build your confidence or simply keen to meet Doug Jnr, we’d love to welcome you to Calcutt Boats Training.

Is your boat ready for autumn?

Can you believe it’s September already?! The days might still feel like summer, but the evenings are getting shorter and cooler — which means it’s time to start thinking about autumn cruising and those first cosy nights back on board. 🥰

Before the weather really turns, why not give your boat a little seasonal MOT?

🍂 Check your heating – if you haven’t used it for a while, make sure everything is working before you actually need it!

🔋 Check your batteries – make sure they’re holding charge and your charging system is working as it should.

💧 Look for leaks and damp – check around windows, hatches, vents and any areas where water could find its way in.

💡 Test your lights – both interior and exterior, plus any torches you might have.

⚓ Check your mooring ropes – wet weather and constant use can take their toll, so look for fraying or worn sections.

🔥 And finally… check your carbon monoxide alarm if you have solid-fuel or gas appliances on board. A fresh set of batteries is a very small price to pay for peace of mind.

A few simple checks now could save you a much bigger headache later!

40 years of canal holidays… and this was one of the best ever! ⭐️

We absolutely loved receiving this review from Graham after his recent week aboard Wild Chervil.

A family party of four, two experienced boaters, two beginners and one excited (and boat-first-timer!) dog 🐶 set off from Calcutt for a week of sunshine, scenery, walks and plenty of pub suppers.

Graham particularly praised our friendly team, the condition of Wild Chervil and the support from his instructor — who helped the less experienced members of the crew get to grips with everything from boat handling to their first lock. The instructor was also able to advise on a sensible route to avoid any canal or lock closures. 👍

And perhaps our favourite bit?
“Would I go with Calcutt again? Absolutely.”
