Bob Dove spent over 40 years in motorsport. Within this time, in 1980, he joined the Alfa Romeo dealer team to help build and run cars. From this, he was involved in the BTCC (British Touring Car Championship) along with many other events. Bob formed a good driver/engineer relationship with Jon Dooley (The main driver for Alfa Romeo). They went on to win many races and finish 3rd overall and win class A in the 1981 BTCC. Fast forward to 2022 and Bob has passed his knowledge and understanding of cars and motorsport onto his two sons Paul and Mikey. Of which, have both excelled in their own passions in motorsport in both their own careers and hobbies due to the passion handed down by their father Bob Dove. Through years of excelling in their own lines of work, both Paul and Mikey are taking their own understanding, knowledge and skills from their own motorsport pathways and coming together to start up Bob Dove Motorsport as a company. Something about blue cars recently.....r34 skyline recently for a clutch upgrade to an os giken twin plate after welding his previous clutch together. Fresh gearbox oil and he's back on his way.

Seriously impressive piece of kit with it feeling lighter than even a standard clutch.

Stunning Series 2 Alfa Romeo Spider 🇮🇹

This stunning Series 2 Alfa Romeo Spider was back with us recently. We rebuilt the engine to a fast-road specification two years ago, and the customer has now brought it back in for a health check and a few additional jobs.

The main job this time was a gearbox rebuild, as it had started crunching into certain gears and was also making a fizzing noise at certain speeds.
As the Propshaft had an overhaul a few years back it helped us located this noise to the gear selector mechanism which we changed for a good used item. Crunching into gears was the normal worn inner and outer synchro ring issue.

While the car was with us, we also:

• Re-torqued the cylinder head
• Carried out an oil and filter change
• Checked the ARF (air-fuel ratio) during a road test to make sure the engine was performing at its best

Another Alfa Romeo 2 litre engine rebuilt, dyno tested, and now back with the customer ready to be refitted into the car.

This is a largely standard engine, with the addition of a lightweight flywheel, a 123 programmable ignition distributor, air filter/ trumpets and some minor valve seat work.

On the dyno, it produced 136 bhp and 137 lb-ft of torque, so we’re very pleased with those results from a near-standard specification.

Alongside the engine, we also rebuilt the gearbox, fitting new inner synchros, outer synchro sleeves, seals, and a new 2nd gear dog ring.

Looking forward to hearing how it performs once it’s back on the road!

Congratulations to our engine customer, Sean McClurg, who last weekend claimed a class victory at the Silverstone Historic GP in his Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT.

Powered by one of our Alfa 1600cc race engines, Sean delivered a fantastic performance to take the class win.

We had this lovely Series 2 Alfa Romeo Spider in last month for a number of major jobs.

The main issues to tackle was the gearbox that was jumping out of reverse, sticking rear brakes, and a pair of Weber carburettors that needed a complete rebuild.

As the car had been sitting unused for several years, we couldn’t even get it to start. We removed the carburettors, completely dismantled them and put them through our ultrasonic cleaner. The amount of dirt that came out was unbelievable, with most of the jets completely blocked. After a thorough clean, we rebuilt both carburettors using new service kits.

To cure the gearbox jumping out of reverse, we replaced the reverse gear and the reverse gear idler. Thankfully, the rest of the gearbox was in excellent condition.

The sticking rear brakes proved to be a little more challenging. We initially traced the fault to a sticking valve in the rear servo, but even after replacing the servo the problem remained. Further investigation eventually led us to the master cylinder. Once this was replaced, the brakes were finally working exactly as they should.

With everything repaired, we were able to get the engine running properly, set up the Weber carburettors, and take the Alfa out for a well-earned test drive before handing it back to its owner.
