This week marks my first successful in-house cloning of a control module 🥳

What is cloning?

Cloning is the process of copying the software, VIN, and security data from a failing control module and flashing it onto a replacement unit. This creates a "digital twin" that allows the car to start immediately.

What is the benefit of offering this service in-house?

Reduced cost, reduced turn around time, and more options for repair..
On this occasion I was able to supply and clone a used control module for less than half the price of a popular online vehicle electronics repairer!

This car came to me with an engine warning light and a single fault code relating to the engine running too lean.

After some checks I confirmed that all engine management readings were plausible, with the exception of the fuel injection times being slightly longer than expected 🤔

Although the fuel pressure at the injectors was correct I decided to measure the electrical current drawn by the fuel pump.
This allowed me to assess the condition of the motor inside the fuel pump..
I found the current pattern was erratic with higher than expected peaks indicating a faulty motor.

Carrying out the same test with a new pump shows just how bad the old one was!
Injection times now shortened and no more fault code 😎

Due to increasing costs I will be restructuring my services and pricing as of January 2026.

My hourly rate will increase to £58. And I will introduce a diagnostic assessment fee of £145.

The assessment will include two hours of labour and cover the ongoing costs of essential diagnostic equipment and software subscriptions needed to make informed repair recommendations.

Another day another diagnostic win 🏆

Skoda Fabia in with a complaint of stop-start system failure.

I found a fault code in the body control module (BCM) for low reference voltage, and damaged wiring from the battery fuse box to the BCM.

The BCM controls one of the starter motor relays.. I concluded that if the BCM could not see the battery voltage it would disable the stop-start system.

By checking the reference voltage live data before and after the repair I was able to confirm the fault was resolved, and a quick road test showed the stop-start system was functioning once again 👍

What a busy summer I've had!

I recently decided that running a small business, renovating a house, and helping to raise a very inquisitive toddler wasn't enough.. So I decided to enrol on an electronic engineering diploma 🙃

Be careful who you let work on your car!

This Honda came in last week for a brake judder..
I found a missing bolt, seized brake calipers sliders, and the front brake discs worn below the manufacturer's minimum specification!
The worst bit.. It recently had new brake pads fitted 💀
