Hitchcocks Motorcycles

Hitchcocks Motorcycles Worldwide parts and accessories supplier for Royal Enfield motorcycles from 1939 to the present day

In the mid 90's we started off our own machine shop which boasts a range of lathes, autos, millers, grinders, capstans, presses, welding equipment and CNC equipment. This gives us strict control over the quality of parts we manufacture. We have strived to improve the image and quality of pattern parts and have seen a vast improvement during the last decade. In a lot of instances we surpass the specification of the original factory parts.

Isn’t this the best kind of story to hear?

A customer down under sent us a few photos of a lovely 1940s Model J Royal Enfield they’d just rescued. One look at that dust-covered photo and we had to know more.

The old Enfield had been lying untouched for decades, tucked away in an old farm shed and buried beneath layers of dust and grime. One comment was that the shed had another resident, a six-foot brown snake which I am sure added a bit more excitement to the recovery.

After pulling the bike out, they gave it a thorough clean to wash away decades of dirt. Beneath it all, an “interesting” colour scheme was revealed! What a great base for a restoration and it should be great fun to get back up and running!

And, of course, the day ended as it should: with a well-earned beer 🍺 and a moment to admire a job well done.

Royal Enfield factory, October 1955. Flywheels for crankshafts being machined on a large factory machine. Just as impressive as the setup itself is the towering stack of flywheels behind the operator — anyone who’s handled one knows just how heavy they are. And of course, a cigarette in hand… a different era of factory life.

Take a look at our latest video! Matt walks through the installation of the DNA Stage 2 Air Filter Kit for the Royal Enfield 650 Classic, Super Meteor, and Shotgun.

After the install, we put the bike on the dyno to see what kind of performance gains the upgrade delivers. Watch the full video to see the results!

Hitchcocks have had our own dedicated chassis dyno since 2013, allowing us to test our products and fine-tune our bikes in-house. As with many things, technology moves on, and over the years a number of upgrades and improvements have become available for the dyno.

This past week, our dyno received some serious internal upgrades to bring it fully up to the latest DynoJet specification. It’s a significant investment, but one that allows improved data sampling and, ultimately, a better product and results at the end of the process.

The first bike on the dyno since the upgrade is the 650 Bear. We’re currently producing dedicated fuelling maps to suit various stages of modification. At present, the bike is running our latest silencer, decat pipe, and a free-flow intake setup.

Next up will be our performance camshaft, with revised fuelling to suit. After that… big bore kits, and potentially some cylinder head work along with billet throttle bodies. Things are about to get interesting.

The Royal Enfield Goan Classic certainly has its own unique looks, and the colour scheme names follow the same pattern of whacky titles.

Trip Teal was bright and bold and the first colour we saw in the UK, but what do you think of Rave Red? It’s a bit more subtle in tone, but it looks seriously good paired with the whitewall tyres. 🏍️

Throwback to the 1930s inside the Royal Enfield factory, where a young engineer is honing cylinder barrels. These are likely to be for a Model H or L, given the flanged inlet for carburettor mounting rather than the separate manifold used on the V-twin K/KX models.

Interesting to spot “Detroit, USA” on the machine, when you might expect it to be British-made back then.

Right… enough archive browsing for me and time to get back to proper work! 😄

You might remember this bike and rider from photos we’ve shared before!

This is a Royal Enfield Model Z2 Cycar, believed to date back to around 1933, shown here with the RAC officer showing directions in a publicity shot.

These wonderful unusual machines were fitted with a 148cc single-cylinder engine and a 3-speed gearbox with hand gear change.

The challenge is… can anyone work out exactly where this photo was taken using the background clues and signposts? 🧐🤔

While the modern Royal Enfield 650 Interceptors have become immensely popular, it was the original 750 models from the 1960s that first gave rise to this legendary name. This authentic publicity shot from the late 1960s shows a model posing atop a striking Series 2 Royal Enfield Interceptor, with crates of brand-new motorcycles ready for shipment in the background. Take a closer look at the “Go Interceptor” poster subtly displayed behind her.
