BUYING TIP: What Should You Look For When Buying a Used Car?

Buying a used car is a big decision, so there are a few important things worth checking before you commit.

1. Service History
Check that the vehicle has been properly maintained and look for supporting invoices where available.

2. MOT History
Review previous MOTs for mileage consistency and any recurring advisories.

3. Vehicle History Check
An HPI check can help confirm important information about the vehicle's history.

4. Condition
Take a good look at the bodywork, interior, tyres and wheels, and always take the car for a test drive.

5. Warranty & Preparation
Find out what preparation has been carried out and what warranty or aftercare is included.

It's a question we're sometimes asked – if your circumstances change, are you stuck with your vehicle finance until the end of the agreement?

𝗜𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀, 𝗻𝗼.

If you have a regulated vehicle finance agreement, such as Hire Purchase (HP) or Personal Contract Purchase (P*P), you can usually ask your finance provider for an 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗲.

This tells you how much you need to pay to settle the outstanding finance. The figure may take into account a rebate of some of the interest you would otherwise have paid.

Thinking about changing your vehicle instead? Having outstanding finance doesn't necessarily stop you from part-exchanging it. The outstanding finance will need to be settled as part of the process, and we're happy to explain how this works.

One important distinction: 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. They're different processes with different rules, so if you're unsure, speak to your finance provider before taking any action.

There isn't one monthly figure that suits everyone. Several things can affect what you pay:
