Josh our Apprentice Technician conducting his first cylinder head gasket replacement with us today on a 200tdi Defender-supervised of course! Josh is learning the importance of attention to detail during the torquing down stage.

Tomorrow’s lesson - adjusting valve clearances correctly… we’ll teach him the ‘Rule of nine’ on this 8 valve engine. Who’s old enough to know what we’re talking about?? 🤓

What’s essential?

- The candidate must have qualifications to IMI level 3 or equivalent.

- Hold a full driving licence.

- They should be comfortable in carrying out servicing, a range of repairs and diagnostics to vehicles independently, whilst displaying good time keeping and workshop practises.

- Displays pride in their workmanship with excellent attention to detail.

What’s preferred?

- Extensive experience working on a wide range of vehicles in a commercial setting would be desirable.

- The Candidate is a competent MOT tester in class 4 and 7 would be an advantage.

Having our client’s best interest at heart means sometimes you have to improvise and remind yourself that patience is definitely key… 🔑

This L405 Range Rover was brought in to us for a rear wiper fault. After some basic fault finding on the circuitry we ascertained that the motor lost its earth connection to the car, causing the motor to be inoperative.
Further investigation revealed that the open circuit fault was in the main tailgate loom. ⚡️

The easiest way to repair this fault would be to connect the wiper motor to known good ground source… although my hunch was that a single wire wouldn’t be the only one damaged and I was right. Multiple wires were on the verge of breaking under inspection- The only robust repair would be to install a new tailgate harness.

Now comes the fun part- the official repair procedure for this is to cut out the whole rear glass to lay the wires, due to little to no access. This would involve a further strip down and further cost. 💵

We opted for a couple of us with a bit of persistence instead- using a length of copper to feed the wires through got this repair done in a timely fashion, without the need to remove the whole tailgate or glass.
All back to the customer with a repair that will last.
