We’re putting learners in control of their car driving test bookings 🚘

If you’ve got a booking or you’ll be looking for a test soon, make a note of these dates πŸ“…

31 March 2026 – only 2 changes can be made to a booking

12 May 2026 – only learners are allowed to book a test and make changes

9 June 2026 – learners can move their booked test only to nearby centres

By changing who can book car and change driving tests, we’re aiming to reduce the re-selling of driving tests, giving the power back to learners πŸ’ͺ

Many drivers believe checking mirrors means a quick glance.

In reality that quick glance is responsible for thousands of collisions every year.

The problem is not mirrors.

The problem is drivers not understanding what they are looking at.

🟒 SAFE (Green)
Vehicle is far enough away.
You have time and space to move.

🟑 Think (Amber)
This is the decision zone.

A vehicle is visible but there may still be space to move if your timing is good.

Here the driver must quickly judge:

Speed of the approaching vehicle
Distance closing
Your own acceleration

Experienced drivers process this quickly.
Learners are taught to be more cautious and wait if unsure.

πŸ”΄ Caution (Danger Zone)
The vehicle is too close or approaching too quickly.

Moving now would likely force the other driver to:

Brake suddenly
Change direction
Take avoiding action

This is the zone where many collisions happen because drivers misjudge distance or speed.

Key points:
Wing mirrors are convex glass .
They make vehicles appear smaller and further away.

That is why you should compare what you see with the interior mirror, which shows a more accurate distance.

The mirror shows most of the picture.
The blind spot shows what the mirror cannot.

About two seconds of observation that can prevent a collision.

The Final Step Drivers Must Never Forget

Before any lane change or movement:

Mirrors
Signal
Blind spot check

Understanding these zones turns a quick glance into real awareness.

It is not always speed or recklessness that causes collisions.
Sometimes it is simply a rushed glance and a distracted brain.
Mirrors do not prevent collisions.

Understanding what you see does.
