Thought I would put this little message out to anyone new who comes across this page. On Tuesday, 23rd September, I took my final attempt to become an Approved Driving Instructor (part 3). Unfortunately, I wasn't successful, which means my.time with Bill plant temporarily over. However, I am in the process of reapplying with the DVSA taking all the relevant tests again. I will be keeping this page open, but for now, no messages will be responded to. I will make another announcement on this page once I am back up and running.. When life knocks you down, get back up, dust yourself off, and we go again 💪💪🫶

One of the most common hiccups learners face? Forgetting the clutch when slowing down or stopping.

Here’s what happens:
• You brake without pressing the clutch → the car stalls.
• The stall feels dramatic, but in reality, it’s just the engine’s way of saying: “Oi! You forgot me!”

Tip:
As you slow down, think of your feet as a team: brake first, clutch just before the car struggles. With practice, the timing becomes second nature.

💡 Remember: Driving is as much about building muscle memory as it is about learning rules.
At first, clutch + brake timing feels like a puzzle. But with repetition, your feet start to “remember” the moves automatically — just like learning to ride a bike or play an instrument. The more you practice, the less you’ll even have to think about it. 🚗✨

👉 Stalling isn’t failure — it’s feedback. Every driver has done it (even instructors!).

Question for you:
How many times did you stall in your first lesson?

LEARNER DRIVERS don’t you just hate them?!
If your first reaction YES then this is aimed at you.

Every single driver on the road was once a learner. Every single one of us stalled, rolled back on a hill, hesitated at a roundabout, or got the biting point wrong. Nobody skipped that stage.

So why is it that when some people see “L” plates, they turn into bullies?
🚫 Sitting on the bumper, tailgating.
🚫 Revving the engine at the lights.
🚫 Leaning on the horn like it’ll somehow help.

Here’s the reality:
✋ When you see a hesitant learner at a junction, it might be their very first time dealing with one.
✋ When they stall, it’s nerves not incompetence.
✋ When they’re moving slower than you’d like, they’re probably processing ten new things at once mirrors, speed, gears, signals, traffic, instructions… and then you, glued to their bumper, making it worse.

Your horn and temper aren’t teaching them. They’re scaring them.
Distracting them.
Making mistakes more likely.

Let’s not forget young people have been learning behaviour from adults long before they ever touch a steering wheel.
If the “example” they see on the road is impatience, rage and intimidation, then guess what?
That’s what they’ll grow into.

Parents know this already: driving lessons are expensive, nerve wracking, and a huge responsibility.
Learners aren’t just “in the way” they’re your kids, your nieces, your nephews, your neighbours.
They are the next generation of drivers.

So here’s the choice for every licensed driver:
👉 Do you want to be remembered as the one who set an example of patience and respect?
Or as the one who terrified a nervous 17-year old on their first lesson?

Bullying a learner won’t make them faster.
It just makes you look small.

To every instructor out there thank you for protecting learners and shaping safer drivers.

The fact that thousands of people pass their tests safely every week is proof of the incredible job you do.

Stay safe.
Show patience.
Remember we’ve all been there!

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT THE DRIVING TEST

🚫 Myth 1: Examiners Have a Pass Quota
✅ Fact: There is no pass or fail quota. Examiners assess each candidate based on their performance during the test. If you meet the required standard, you pass simple as that.

🚫 Myth 2: Stalling Means Automatic Failure
✅ Fact: Stalling isn’t an automatic fail. It’s how you handle the situation that matters. If you stall but recover quickly and safely, it’s typically marked as a driver fault.

🚫 Myth 3: Crossing Hands on the Steering Wheel Leads to Failure
✅ Fact: Crossing your hands while steering isn’t a fault in itself. Examiners look for safe and controlled steering, regardless of hand position.

🚫 Myth 4: You Must Drive at the Speed Limit at All Times
✅ Fact: Speed limits are maximums, not targets. Driving at a speed appropriate for the road and conditions is key.
Driving too fast or too slow can both be faults.

🚫 Myth 5: Taking the Test at Certain Times Increases Chances of Passing
✅ Fact: There’s no evidence that test timing affects outcomes. Being well-prepared and confident is the best strategy, regardless of the time of day.

🚫 Myth 6: Examiners Want You to Take a Specific Route
✅ Fact: While certain routes are commonly used, examiners can vary the test route. Familiarity with various road types and conditions is more beneficial than memorizing a specific path.

🚫 Myth 7: Driving Slowly Shows You’re a Careful Driver
✅ Fact: Driving significantly below the speed limit without reason can be seen as a lack of confidence and may disrupt traffic flow.

🚫 Myth 8: You Automatically Fail If You Take a Wrong Turn
✅ Fact: Taking a wrong turn isn’t an automatic fail. Examiners assess your ability to drive safely, not your navigation skills.

🚫 Myth 9: Male Learners Pass More Easily Than Female Learners
✅ Fact: Pass rates can vary, but success depends on individual preparation and performance, not gender.

By understanding the facts, you’re better prepared to approach your driving test with confidence.
Don’t let myths hold you back focus on safe and informed driving practices.

Remember, staying informed and practicing safe driving habits are key to success.

Some useful information from the great crew from Nottingham 👍

When on a 'blue light' journey our crews need to get to their destination as quickly, and safely, as possible. To do this, we rely on the co-operation of other road users.

Here’s some top tips for if you see or hear an emergency service vehicle approaching

😌 Keep calm!
🎶 Turn off any loud music so you can concentrate
👀 Look and listen to where the sirens are coming from
❌ Don't panic or brake suddenly as this could cause a collision
🚙 Pull over if safe, and indicate when doing so
🚒 Leave enough space for our vehicles to get through
🚦Do not proceed through a red light, if you heard two pips of a horn, that’s just the sound we make when turning off our sirens!
