What to expect on the day of your practical driving test 🚗
Taking your driving test is a big milestone, and it’s completely normal to feel a little nervous! To help you feel prepared, here’s exactly what will happen on the day:
✅ Arrival
We generally pick you up 1 hour before your test time for a practice. Make sure you have your provisional driving licence with you — without it, your test cannot go ahead. We'll make our way there 10mins before.
✅ Before the drive
An examiner will come out to greet you. They’ll check your licence and ask you to read a number plate from a distance (this is the eyesight check). You’ll also be asked two vehicle safety questions — things like checking tyres or lights — which we’ll have practiced during your lessons.
Please note: If you’d like to use our dual-controlled tuition cars for your test, there is an additional fee. This covers my time, use of the vehicle, and ensuring everything is fully prepared and safe for your test.
✅ The driving part
The test lasts around 40 minutes. You’ll drive in different road conditions, including residential areas, main roads, and possibly dual carriageways. You’ll be asked to follow road signs or directions given by the examiner. You’ll also need to perform one manoeuvre (such as parallel parking or bay parking) and possibly an emergency stop exercise. You may also be asked to drive independently for about 20 minutes, following signs or a sat nav.
Remember — the examiner isn’t there to catch you out! They’re just assessing whether you’re a safe, competent driver who can drive without supervision. It’s okay to make a small mistake, as long as it doesn’t affect safety.
✅ The result
Once you return to the test centre, the examiner will tell you whether you’ve passed or not. They’ll explain any faults you made and give you feedback. If you pass, you can choose to apply for your full licence right away. If you don’t pass, they’ll let you know what to practice before your next attempt — and your instructor will be there to help you work on those areas!
Good luck.
