-Explained Series -

I often hear a customer mention that they do not like the long-life service schedule that their car is supposed to use as standard, so they want to do an interim oil change. We sell oils, so we have no issue in selling an oil for the job, but I will point out that they might not benefit from the oil change.

Some modern cars list service schedules of up to 25000 miles or 2 years and while that might seem like a very long time for an oil to be in the car, it really depends on the use that a car is getting. If the car is used for regular long drives, like motorway use, then the oil is having an easy time and the long-life service schedule is fine with that. Using the car for shorter trips, like a short school run, a couple of miles to work, then repeat the same later that day, means that the oil is not getting warm enough to evaporate off any water or fuel that has accumulated in the oil. The build up of fuel and water in the oil, leads to sludge accumulating in the sump. So even if the car only does something like 8000 miles in 2 years, the oil can be in a much worse state than in a car that has done over 20000 miles.

If you are going to use a long-life service schedule, you need the right oil, one that meets the manufacturer’s specifications for the longer interval. The oils aimed at those specifications will generally have a higher dose of additives than ones aimed at standard servicing, and those additives will help the oil to perform as it should throughout the service period.

If you want to service your car more often than the long-life schedule, you may still need to use one of the long-life specification oils. With a lot of the long-life specifications, as well as being suitable for the extended service period, they will also meet emission standards for particulate filters.

If the car is under warranty, then an interim service can be tricky – you can’t just drain and replace the oil and filter yourself, as it may invalidate the warranty. You would need to take the car to a garage that meets the standards for warranty requirements.

-REFRESH SERIES -
The "W" in Engine / Gear / Diff oil stands for winter.
With the first number in the Oil classification referring to cold weather viscosity, the lower the number is, the less viscous the oil will be at lower temperatures.
For example, a 5W- Engine / Gear / Diff oil will flow better at lower temperatures than a 15W- oil at lower temps.
