Another day, another successful course for 3 novice operators on a 3A- Scissor lift.

This JLG 2632ES was a little taller than what we needed for the job today, but nonetheless performed well all day, as did the three operators on the course.

Very busy this week for us teaching 3 separate novice counterbalance courses at Budget Forktrucks.

Although our training area is large, it took good communication and us three trainers working together to make it all happen.

All delegates received passes and I certainly had a really productive course with the three gents I was training, even doing some banksman/spotter practice towards the end of the course to simulate their working environment and conditions.

A 1.2-tonne crate fell from a forklift truck and left a 64-year-old worker with life-changing injuries.

Smith & Nephew Medical Ltd has been fined £230,000 after a delivery driver was seriously injured during an unloading operation at the company's Hull site.

The crate, containing an electron microscope, was being unloaded when it fell from the forklift truck and landed on the worker.

Our investigation found the operation had not been properly assessed, planned or supervised. There had been no assessment of whether the forklift truck was suitable for the load, while the company had also failed to consider how the lift should be carried out, who should be involved and what precautions were needed.

HSE Inspector David Stewart said:

“This case should serve as a reminder to the wider industry of the need to properly plan and supervise unloading operations, particularly where non-standard loads are involved.”

Smith & Nephew Medical Ltd was fined £230,000 and ordered to pay £111,000 in costs after being found guilty of breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
