Tyres - a regular problem!

2.15 Million MOT fails: The Tyre Crisis nobody talks about
In the years 2023-24, it was reported that over 2.15 million UK vehicles failed their annual MOT due to ‘tyre defects’ (according to DVSA data published on the Gov website).

Tick any of the below, and the vehicle falls into this MOT failure category:

Tread depth
Damage
Underinflation
Tyres deemed as “Dangerous condition”
And in this instance, points do not make prizes.

Year on year, the data has risen exponentially, uncovering a serious nationwide maintenance problem.

If a vehicles TPMS is regularly serviced and maintained, there is potential for the above statistics to be dramatically reduced. Being vigilant when the warning light first appears on the dash can highlight issues before they become major concerns. Low pressure can be responsible for uneven tyre wear, tyre wall damage and worse still – blow outs.

These statistics raise a number of questions:

Do drivers feel intimidated by the warning light on the dash?

Do road users drive around in ignorance, not realising the potential harm to themselves and others?

Are road users being sold to, rather than educated?

And finally – and arguably linked to all of the above – In todays cost of living crisis, are road users prioritising other expenses over basic vehicle maintenance?

Please check your tyres and pressures regularly.

I thought we could add to the debate about in car cameras on a workshop visit.
We do not allow filming of any kind without prior permission. And this can also be refused regularly.
We have a viewing area and are quite happy to show a customer a specific item up close if they have a concern.

"Regarding legality, while recording on public property like roads is permitted, vehicle owners technically need permission to record inside the workshop since it’s private space." Shopownermag.

We often get asked "how long is the grace period once your MOT has run out?" In short - none! No such thing.

"New figures reveal that over 5 million cars were driven without an MOT. Of these, more than 360,000 were presented for a new MOT more than a year after their old test had expired.

The research, conducted by Select Car Leasing, highlights the importance of MOTs to ensure that vehicles on our roads continue to meet safety and environmental standards.

Motorists can face fines and prosecutions for failing to have a valid MOT certificate for their vehicle."

There is no grace period for getting an MOT after the previous one has expired, and motorists cannot drive or park their vehicles on the road if the MOT has run out, with the exception of driving to or from getting the car repaired, or to a pre-arranged MOT test.

Failure to follow these rules could result in a £1,000 fine."

From Garage Wire magazine...

But here’s the thing: the MOT test is a bargain. A garage can charge a maximum fee of £54.85 for a qualified MOT tester with years of experience to assess the roadworthiness and safety of a car. That’s incredible value for money, especially when many garages charge less.

For context, the average gym membership costs £40 per month, while a top-tier Sky subscription costs £45. You’ll need the former if you spend too much time enjoying the latter.

Crucially, neither a strenuous workout nor some time in front of the telly will keep you, your family and other road users safe from the dangers of a defective car. Not only that, but an MOT test acts like an early warning system for a car; a chance to identify any faults before they become a more serious and expensive problem.

Even at 55 quid, the MOT test is a steal; in Germany, you’ll pay anything up to €150 for a general inspection (Hauptuntersuchung).

Scaremongering in the press devalues the importance of the MOT and the role of the testers who help to keep the good cars on the road and the bad ones off our streets.

At £80 in 2034, drivers would be getting the deal of the decade.

We are looking to go legal over the BT slamming of our phone line. Are there any legal teams out there willing to take them on? They have admitted they got things wrong, why and what they have done to make amends. See comments.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. It's been a difficult year, many thanks for bearing with us. Now that we have our phone number back, we need to replace staff and try to recoup some of the lost income. Hopefully our lost customers will return.

Hooray 🎉. We finally have our main phone number back 01634 371171.
After many hours of calls to BT we got it back. Months without it have cost us dearly. So sorry to any of you that couldn't get hold of us. The task now is to get our customers back. Some long years ahead of us.
