When did you last properly check your trailer lights?
Working lights are essential for making sure other road users can see you, understand when you're braking or turning, and see your trailer clearly in poor weather and darkness.
Here are 5 common faults worth dealing with straight away:
💧 1. Water inside the lens – moisture can cause corrosion and electrical problems.
💡 2. Blown bulbs – indicators, brake lights and tail lights all need to work correctly.
🔨 3. Cracked or damaged lenses – can allow water in and affect light output.
🔌 4. Faulty wiring or connectors – corrosion, damaged cables and poor connections can cause intermittent faults.
🔢 5. Number plate light not working – easily overlooked, but your registration plate needs to be properly illuminated at night.
With the darker evenings and wetter weather, now is a good time to give your trailer lighting a proper check.

Your trailer tyres might have plenty of tread left, but tread isn’t everything!
Trailers often cover fewer miles than cars, which means tyres can become old before the tread wears out. Over time, the rubber can harden, crack and perish, increasing the risk of tyre failure.
🔍 Do you know how to check the age?
Look on the tyre sidewall for the 4-digit date code. For example:
👉 0722 = manufactured in the 7th week of 2022
When checking your trailer tyres, look out for:
⚠️ Cracking or perishing
⚠️ Sidewall damage
⚠️ Bulges or deformation
⚠️ Uneven wear
⚠️ Signs of ageing or hardening
⚠️ Incorrect tyre pressures
And don't forget the spare tyre — it ages too, even if it's never been used!
