Mk1 Jetta boot floor replacement part 1. So the boot floor has had some sort of sound proofing added too it, which has trapped water and caused it to rust/ rot out pretty bad. It has also had a section of the lower brace cut out and had a couple of previous patches put in. So we’ve removed the full rear boot floor, spare wheel well floor sections and rear brace section. The rear panel to boot floor lip sections were also rotten and needed to be replaced.

Weeks of cutting, grinding, fabricating and welding showcased into less than 2 minutes. There were so many patches and poor repairs on this n/s rear wheel arch/ tub. All rot cut out, inner sections all protected from future corrosion and new panels/ sections welded in. This is the only way to do it correctly and that’s the only way we know here at Vehicle Welding Northwest.

We have recently had this vw T2 in the workshop to assess the scale of welding work needed. The client wanted the old vw camper experience but was sold something far from it.

Just from the initial inspection you could clearly see the amount of rot/ rust and previous patchwork going on around the van, but some was hidden under the interior.

The n/s step was bolted through the outriggers, they had snapped off from the body. The n/s sill had wire mesh stuffed in it and filled over.

Now for people who know me, know I love a challenge and will happily restore any vehicle from the ground up, but with this one I had a talk to the customer about undertaking it, as just in the bodywork alone could of been around the 40k mark by the time is was all finished. As every panel had rot in and the panels behind it were also rotten and in need of work. So with being on a budget it just wasn’t going to add up.

I advised the client that it would be more cost effective to look for another that doesn’t need a full restoration just to be able to go away camping in it.
We see this quite a lot, where customers have recently bought a classic vehicle and brought it to us to have a look over and do a few little jobs. This ends up with us looking over the vehicle and finding numerous bodges, structural damage, filler, chicken wire, newspaper, someone’s one left over takeaway boxes as repairs. You name it, we’ve probably found it in sills and wheel tubs as a “repair” where someone’s mates uncles brothers can do it cheaper in his shed. The client has already been looking at a few T2s and asked if we can go and have a look with her so this doesn’t happen again. Another service we offer is we will come out with the client and inspect the vehicle prior to purchasing it.
I wanted to write this post to highlight a few areas which are, make sure you know what you’re buying, don’t just rust into it because it’s got a nice interior, shiny paint and seems like a bargain, understand that good work and restoration work is not cheap and finally if your unsure what you are looking for, don’t worry we can help you.
