Cruising Inspiration! Day cruises, weekend cruises and longer distance destinations.

We've put together some of our recommendations for cruise destinations from Mayflower Marina; let us know if you have any further favourites we can add to our top cruising list.

Short Cruises from Mayflower Marina:
Plymouth is in the enviable position of offering a host of cruising options for sailors with varying ambitions. For those looking for something very close to the marina, Cawsand, a quaint Cornish seaside village, is adjacent to the Western End of the Breakwater just a mile from the marina. Complete with wood fringed shore and a sandy beach, it is perfect for a swim, a dinghy trip ashore for an ice cream of a pasty, or sitting aboard and watching the world go by. It's best if the wind is in the west.
For a gentle day sail, the River Yealm is ideal. Some 4 miles to the East of the Breakwater it is one of the most picturesque and tranquil places one could hope to visit. Anchoring at the mouth of the Yealm by Cellars beach is particularly lovely in calm weather. Further upstream harbour authority moorings are offered for overnight or longer-term visitor berthing.

Recommendations for weekend cruise destinations from Mayflower Marina:

Salcombe lies 22 miles to the East of the Breakwater, whilst Looe and Fowey lie 11 and 22 miles, respectively, to the West.

Recommendations for longer distance cruise destinations from Mayflower Marina (one week +).

To the West, Falmouth and the Helford River (39 miles), Penzance (64 miles) and the Isles of Scilly (92 miles) are fabulous options if the weather is favourable, whilst, to the East, Dartmouth (35 miles) and St Peter Port, Guernsey (70 miles) via Salcombe (22 miles) are all options that will reward the cruising sailor.

Meet Mike Knowles - Mayflower Marina Harbour Master

Mike Joined Mayflower Marina in 1994 after service in the Merchant Navy and a spell as a sailing instructor in Salcombe. After 31 years at Mayflower Marina, he has amassed a wealth of knowledge about all things afloat and ashore.

Mike shares an office with Andy Hilder, Kyle Collins, and Paul Crofts, and together they share the Duty Manager role on weekends. Although not one to blow his own trumpet, he has won a national dinghy sailing championship and he holds an RYA Yachtmaster’s ticket.

Do you remember Jasmine's little brightly coloured boat that arrived in Mayflower Marina in April 2023? It seemed so improbable that such a small yacht and a relative newcomer to sailing could circumnavigate.
Well, hats off to Jasmine - she did it! What a remarkable and inspirational achievement. Many, many congratulations!

Better Safe than Sorry at Mayflower Marina

Safety is our top priority! Please take a moment to read our important safety guidelines to ensure everyone enjoys their time at the marina. For more detailed info, visit our general safety page: https://mayflowermarina.co.uk/resources/general-safety/

General Safety Tips:

Be cautious on the pontoons, especially at night and during bad weather
Wear appropriate footwear and avoid running
Keep kids safe—no ‘riding’ in marina trolleys, and make sure young children and non-swimmers wear lifejackets
Never leave hazardous or flammable materials on the pontoons or in the boatyard
Allow the water supply to run for 30 seconds before filling your water tanks. Boil water before drinking
Report any defective marina equipment immediately

🚨 Man Overboard?
In case someone falls into the water, shout for help and swim to the nearest safety ladder. If you're not a strong swimmer, use dinghies, transom ladders, or nearby boat lines for assistance. Always keep onboard rescue equipment handy

🚑 First Aid & Emergency
Our team is trained in first aid, and we have first aid boxes located at the marina office and staff room. A defibrillator is also available for public use at the marina office.

🏊‍♂️ Swimming & Diving
Swimming within the marina is not permitted, and diving is only allowed with written permission.

Your safety matters to us—let’s all work together to keep the marina safe for everyone!
