Driving a Golf GTE, Audi e-tron, or CUPRA Born? Your brakes might be "sleeping" on the job. ⚡️🚙

One of the perks of driving a hybrid or EV is regenerative braking. Your motor does most of the heavy lifting to slow you down, which means your brake pads can last for 80,000 miles or more.

But there’s a hidden catch. 🛑

Because the mechanical brakes aren't used often, they stay cold. In a normal petrol car, that heat helps burn off moisture. In an EV, the brake fluid just sits there, getting "wetter" and more contaminated over time without you ever noticing.

We’re seeing more and more three-year-old EVs with perfectly thick pads but seized calipers and "wet" fluid. If you ever have to do a true emergency stop, you’re asking 100% performance from a system that’s been sitting stagnant for years.

Does your Transporter or camper sit for weeks at a time? There's a good chance diesel bug is brewing in the tank.

Modern diesel holds more water than the old stuff, and when a van only does a few thousand miles a year the fuel sits there for months. Condensation builds, microbes feed where the water meets the diesel, and you end up with black sludge clogging filters, blocking injectors, and leaving you stranded : usually on the way to somewhere good.

We're seeing more of it on Transporters and camper conversions coming through the workshop. Hard starting, flat power, repeat filter changes, black smoke under load. All classic signs.

The fix is straightforward if you catch it early. Left too long and you're looking at injectors, pumps, and tank work : not cheap.

If your van's been sat over winter, or mostly does short local runs, get it checked before the season starts. We'll inspect the filters, treat the fuel properly, and tell you exactly how to store it to stop it coming back.

An Audi A5 needs more than an oil change.
This one came in for a major service and MOT. We work to the manufacturer's schedule — not a simplified version of it. Fresh spark plugs, new air filter, full inspection. OE-quality parts throughout. No cheap alternatives that cause problems six months down the line.

Most main dealer "Haldex services" are just a fluid change.
Drain the old oil. Refill it. Hand you the keys. Job done — apparently.
The problem is that fine gauze filter on the pump. It stays exactly where it is — caked in sludge — because pulling the pump takes time, and time costs money they'd rather not spend.
Leave that filter long enough and the pump starves. It overworks. It burns out. And just like that, your Quattro or 4Motion becomes a heavy front-wheel-drive car with a dash full of warning lights and a repair bill that didn't have to happen.

We do it differently.
At High Volt Garage, we pull the pump every time. We strip it, properly clean the gauze, and then replace the fluid. That's the complete service — not a shortcut dressed up as one.
It's the only way to actually protect the unit in the long term.

If the steering on your Audi A4, A5, or Q5 feels stiff or notched, don't rush into buying a new rack.

Most owners panic when the steering gets heavy, immediately thinking of a massive bill for a power steering pump or a steering rack replacement. In reality, it’s often a much simpler (and cheaper) fix.

The lower steering column universal joint (UJ) is exposed to the elements. Over time, road salt and grime get in, the joint seizes, and the steering starts to bind. It’s a classic failure point on these models, but it’s one that often gets misdiagnosed by garages that don't see them every day.

We don’t guess. We know exactly where to look. This A5 was in for exactly that: new shaft fitted, steering back to factory smooth, and a much smaller bill for the customer than a main dealer would have quoted.
