This one caught the customer off guard.

A 2016 Audi Q5 S tronic came in with a vibration they couldn't explain. No warning light, no fault code, just a feeling something wasn't right.

We picked it up on the road test straight away: dual mass flywheel, casing twisted and cracked away from the seam. You can see it in the photo.

Most people assume S tronic and DSG cars don't have this kind of wear part because there's no clutch pedal. There is a clutch pack behind that gearbox, and it wears like any other.

Haldex service on an Audi Q3 today.

Have a look at what came out of it. That's the build up that blocks the filter and starves the pump.

The Haldex is a scheduled service item at every 40,000 miles. It's not optional and it's not a nice to have, but most of the cars that come through here have never had it done. Owners usually don't know it's on the schedule in the first place.

Here's the part that matters. Draining and refilling the fluid isn't a Haldex service. The pump has to come off so the filter can be replaced and the strainer cleaned properly. Most main dealers won't do that. We do.

Leave it and the pump eventually packs up. You lose drive to the rear axle, and you end up paying for a pump on top of the service you were trying to avoid.

If you've got a quattro or 4Motion and you can't remember the last time the Haldex was done, it's due.

SOS system battery, another one done.

We're seeing a lot of these lately across VW Group vehicles. The eCall/SOS system runs off its own separate battery, and on plenty of VW, Audi, SEAT, Škoda and CUPRA models it's now old enough to be failing. This one was a Transporter van, warning light on, SOS battery on its way out.

Some of these have been on back order for a while, but we're getting hold of them and getting cars sorted.

DSG front cover, rusted through and leaking.

Another one in this week. DSG gearbox, oil leaking from the front cover, and once we had a proper look the cover itself had rusted away. Not a seal, not a gasket, the housing. No fixing that, it needed replacing.

Went in with a genuine front cover and gave the gearbox a full service while it was apart, since you're already in there and it makes no sense to close it back up and do the fluid separately later.

If you've got DSG oil on the floor or a leak you've been putting off, get it looked at. Left too long and you're not just dealing with a leak, you're risking the gearbox internals.

Audi Q5, water pump leaking everywhere.

Came in for a water leak. That pink crust all over the engine bay is dried coolant, water pump was heavily leaking and had been for a while.

Sorted it properly, new timing belt kit and water pump together rather than just chasing the leak.

Timing belt done, water pump left alone. We're seeing it a lot.

We've had a run of this recently. Customers bring a car in, timing belt was replaced somewhere else in the past, all looks fine on paper. Then we get it on the ramp and the water pump's still original. Leaking, weeping, on its way out.

Not every garage changes the pump at the same time as the belt. We do, on any car where the water pump is driven off the timing belt. If the belt's coming off for a job that size, the pump comes off it too. Doing one without the other means going back in for the same labour a year or two down the line, and a failed pump on a belt-driven system can take the belt with it.

If your timing belt's been done elsewhere and you're not sure whether the pump was included, bring it in and we'll take a look.

EA211 1.5 TSI — roller finger followers strike again.

We've seen a couple of these in lately, and they're never a small job once they let go.
The roller finger follower sits between the camshaft and the valve. When it fails, you get a rattle, a misfire, sometimes a warning light — and if it's left, the damage doesn't stay contained. We've done some big repairs on these engines as a result.
Here's the uncomfortable part: long-life servicing might be part of the problem. Stretched oil change intervals don't do these engines any favours. The oil is doing more work than the schedule gives it credit for.

Most main dealer "Haldex services" are just a fluid change.
Drain the old oil. Refill it. Hand you the keys. Job done : apparently.
The problem is that fine gauze filter on the pump. It stays exactly where it is : caked in sludge : because pulling the pump takes time, and time costs money they'd rather not spend.
Leave that filter long enough and the pump starves. It overworks. It burns out. And just like that, your Quattro or 4Motion becomes a heavy front-wheel-drive car with a dash full of warning lights and a repair bill that didn't have to happen.

We do it differently.
At High Volt Garage, we pull the pump every time. We strip it, properly clean the gauze, and then replace the fluid. That's the complete service : not a shortcut dressed up as one.
It's the only way to actually protect the unit in the long term.
If you're running a VW, Audi, SEAT, Škoda, or CUPRA with AWD, don't wait for the warning lights. Get it done properly before it gets expensive.

Rear suspension arms, a front bush, and a driveshaft — the knocks, clunks and uneven tyre wear that creep up over the miles.
Worth flagging: the rear arms that carry the springs are starting to rot on these Passats. Common on cars of this age, and an MOT failure waiting to happen. Catch it early and it's a straightforward fix.
