Here’s a quick question! When’s the last time you checked your tyre tread depth? If it’s been a while, don’t worry, the 20p test is here to save the day!
Simply insert a 20p coin into the grooves of your tyres. If the outer band of the coin is still visible, your tread may be below the legal minimum of 1.6mm, and it’s time to replace your tyres. Be sure to check at least three points around each tyre for an accurate reading.
Doing this once a month takes just minutes and could prevent disruptions to your journey, fines, or costly replacements.

With the weather just not getting any better, adequate tread depth is essential, especially when there is significant standing water. The lower the tread, the less water it can clear, increasing your chances of ‘aquaplaning.’ When this happens, tyres are not effectively in contact with the road, making any attempts to steer, brake or accelerate ineffective, in other words, you become out of control.
