Funny how times change…

After yesterday’s post about the Twin Cam making its way back to Scotland, I went digging through some old photos.

Back in the 90s and early 2000s, these things were everywhere. A lot brought across the water for peanuts, drove hard, sold on again for maybe £200 profit and nobody thought twice about it. 😂

Nobody was talking about investments, originality or future values. They were just cars we wanted to own, modify and enjoy.

If we’d only known then what we know now! 🙈

Around 30 years ago, this Twin Cam left Scotland and made its way across the water to Ireland. Today I’ve delivered it to Belfast docks, where it’s about to make that same journey in reverse, back to Scotland.

Over 2 years ago, its new owner got in touch with me with a very specific request. He wanted a Twin Cam, this particular spec and colour, fully restored, and he wanted one of the best examples available. He’s a man who could have gone out and bought any number of modern performance cars, but that wasn’t what he wanted. He wanted this, a Twin Cam exactly as he remembered them.

A request like that was never going to be filled overnight, but eventually the right car came along.

There’s something fitting about standing at Belfast docks today knowing the journey this car has made. It also makes you realise just how much the world has changed in those 30 odd years. When this car first crossed the water in the 90s, Twin Cams were simply used cars that could be bought for a fraction of what the best examples command today.

Now, over three decades later, it’s heading back to Scotland potentially worth close to ten times what it was bought for when it first made the journey across.

Funny how things come full circle. Same car, same stretch of water, just over 30 years, a full restoration and a very different price tag between the two journeys!

An interesting observation from the past few days.

It’s now Wednesday and somehow we are still fielding opinions, valuations and emotional reactions from a post that went up on Sunday.

Which tells its own story.

What started as a simple Sunday Session, something we have recently used to showcase rare, genuine, low mileage examples, has somehow turned into a four day debate featuring the unofficial comment section appraisal committee. Armed with screenshots, outdated price guides and comparisons that completely ignore condition, provenance and context.

And that is the part we find most interesting.

Because while some people are still trying to explain why something should not be worth what it is, the market has already moved on.

The car is already sold.

And the only opinion that actually mattered in the equation, the buyer’s, was formed in a matter of hours, not days.

So it raises a fair question on our end.

If one post can create this level of noise, drag on for the better part of a week and still be misunderstood long after the deal is done, is it even worth continuing Sunday Sessions in the same format?

Because the intention was always to showcase the best of what is out there.

Not to provide a weekly discussion panel for people with no intention of buying, but plenty of time to critique.

And more importantly, we have no interest in diluting what we do just to keep content flowing.

We are not here to post average cars for the sake of engagement.

We are here to source and present top tier examples. The kind that stop people in their tracks, not blend into a timeline.

So going forward, Sunday Sessions will be scaled back to maybe one or two per month.

Fewer posts. Higher standard. No compromise.

Not because of criticism, that comes with the territory, but because it is becoming increasingly clear that the people who understand these cars do not need convinced, and the people who don't will never be convinced.

As always, we will continue sourcing and selling the best examples we can find.

That wont change.

The gentleman who arrived this afternoon is one of Ireland’s most under the radar collectors. He has a mouthwatering collection that has never been seen in the public eye, and now he owns one of the best UK GTIs in the country.

And here’s the best bit…

It’s the exact same model and colour as his very first car.

So while a few people in the comments were asking what drugs I must have been on with the price…

Someone else was busy buying back a piece of their youth.

Funny how that keeps happening.

Toyota Corolla GT-i 16 AE92 – A True Survivor

As time goes on, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to source unknown, low mileage, pristine collectables. Yet again, we’ve managed to shock ourselves.

Last Monday, we received a message from a good friend about a stunning, highly sought after AE92 that had been posted online just minutes earlier. We knew immediately this wouldn’t sit around.

We contacted the owner privately, got his number, and made the call.

He explained he was selling the car on behalf of an elderly relative. Everything was still there, right down to the original bill of sale. He was meticulous in his description of the car and completely transparent about its condition. He also made it clear there was already a strong offer on the table, just shy of what he wanted.

Cars like this rarely surface publicly, and when they do they tend to disappear just as quickly.

I asked him for his price.

He told me.

We agreed.

A deposit secured the car there and then.

A few days later we had the race shuttle on the road and pointed towards Southampton. What followed was a 35-hour round trip mission, but when a car like this appears, hesitation usually means missing out.

This Corolla GT-i 16 has covered just under 27,000 miles from new and remains with one owner.

Having spent its entire life in sunny Jersey, this example has never seen salted roads or endured harsh winters. It hasn’t done long motorway slogs. It hasn’t been passed around. It hasn’t been interfered with.

The condition can only be described as exceptional, even by our standards.

We won’t claim it’s the lowest mileage example in existence. But with this mileage, ownership, and history, it is unquestionably one of the finest surviving examples.

In 1990s Ireland, you couldn’t move for them. Sharing the same engine as the AE86, many were sacrificed to keep their rear wheel drive siblings alive. Survivors like this now define the market.

Pricing something of this calibre isn’t easy. There are no real comparables. We consulted one of the UK’s leading auction houses, and their explanation was simple:

An example like this would comfortably achieve north of £40,000 through their doors.

Price: £44,000

Let’s say you were handed the keys to Dr Brown’s DeLorean time machine.

You can go back to any year, walk into any showroom, and buy one brand new car to bring back to the present day.

Not based on today’s value.
Not based on what would make you rich.

Just the car you wish you had sitting in your garage today.

Personally we are split between a 22B and an AE86 Corolla. Worlds apart, but both rank at the top of our favourites.

No flipping it for profit. This is the one you’re keeping.
