As snow is falling in parts of the UK today, it's important to remember what Rule 229 of the Highway Code states before you set off on any journey 🌨️:

You MUST be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows ✔️
You MUST ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible✔️
Make sure the mirrors are clear and the windows are demisted thoroughly ✔️
Remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users ✔️
Check your planned route is clear of delays and that no further snowfalls or severe weather are predicted ✔️

Drive safely, and do not travel in severe weather unless your journey is essential ❄️

There is lots of snow around today and possibly tomorrow.
Please clear frost and snow from your vehicle windows before you start your journey.
It’s a good time to check that you have sufficient screen wash in your vehicle.
Those caught driving without clearing their car sufficiently are breaking Rule 229 of the Highway Code, which states windows, lights and number plates must be clear of snow.
Failure to do so could incur a fine, but more importantly could place your life, the lives of your passengers and the lives of those around you in danger.

It’s been in the news recently that a member of parliament has been seen not wearing a seatbelt.

It is 1 of the Fatal4

Did you know.

It is the responsibility of the driver to make sure anyone under 14 years of age are wearing their seatbelts...once 14 years old it is up to the passenger to take responsibility!

You can be fined up to £500 if you don’t wear a seat belt when you’re supposed to.

What value would you put on a serious injury or being killed ?

You must wear a seat belt if one is fitted in the seat you’re using. You’re also only allowed 1 person in each seat fitted with a seat belt.

Seatbelt wearing saves over 2,000 lives every year. Everyone knows they should wear a seat belt in the front seat, but many people still don’t realise how dangerous it is not to wear a seat belt in the back.

In a crash at 30mph, if you are unrestrained, you will hit the front seat, and anyone in it, with a force of between 30 and 60 times your own body weight. This could result in death or serious injury to you and people sitting in front of you.

When passengers are not restrained by a seat belt, three forms of collision occur. The first collision involves the vehicle and another object, the second occurs between the individuals in the vehicle and the vehicles interior, while the third collision occurs when the body’s internal organs hit against the individuals’ skeletal structure or chest wall.

Don’t risk it, always wear your seatbelt.

As you may have felt over the last few days, our winter weather has begun to make an impact on Derbyshire.

With this, it’s important to make sure your car is equipped for the weather change. We've all seen a poor motorist sliding along after sudden snowfall and even the most experienced of drivers can get caught out in the challenging conditions that snow and ice can present for road users.

For some new drivers, this may be your first winter as a car owner. It’s important to adapt your driving to the conditions of the road.

Here are a few winter driving tips, that even our most experienced police drivers still use:
❄️ Pull away in second gear, easing your foot off the clutch to avoid wheel-spin.
❄️ Leave extra time before setting off on a journey to thoroughly defrost your vehicles, ensuring your windscreens and lights are completely clear.
❄️ Drive slowly and maintain safe stopping distances – in bad weather it can take ten times longer to come to a stop.
❄️ Give more warning than usual to other drivers when turning, stopping or changing lane.
❄️ If you happen to skid, steer gently into it and try not to brake or accelerate until you’re back in control. Dropping gears instead of braking can help prevent skidding.
❄️ Accelerate gently, use low revs and change up to a higher gear as quickly as possible.
❄️ Approach corners steadily, in as low a gear as possible. Don’t touch the clutch unless it’s necessary, steer smoothly and avoid braking on bends.
❄️ When driving uphill leave plenty of room in front, or wait until it is clear, so that you can maintain a constant speed without the need for changing gear.
❄️ Use a low gear for going downhill and try to avoid braking unless necessary.
❄️ Check your tyres to ensure they have the legal tread required, tyres with less tread are more likely to lose grip with the road.

Most people have experienced the difficulties faced with winter driving, please have patience with other drivers and remember that they might not be as experienced in winter conditions.
