Heard about driving test faults, but not sure what they mean? 🚗

There are 3 categories of faults you can make during your driving test:

A dangerous fault: this involves actual danger to you, the examiner, the public or property.

A serious fault: this is something potentially dangerous.

A driving fault: this is not potentially dangerous, but if you keep making the same fault, it could become a serious fault.

You’ll pass your driving test if you make no more than 15 driving faults and make zero serious or dangerous faults. ✅

Don’t just memorise the test route — learn to actually read the road! 🛣️

When approaching complex junctions like Bramcote Island in Nottingham (heading Bramcote Derby Road to Ilkeston A6007), relying on memory can cause panic. Instead, build the habit of cross-checking these cues — the order you’ll see them can vary from roundabout to roundabout, so treat this as what to look for, not a fixed sequence:

✅ Ground markings, where they’re clear — confirm your lane position early
✅ Overhead or roadside direction signs — these are often your most reliable source, especially where markings are faded or missing
✅ The final lane split (Ilkeston vs Stapleford) — your last chance to double-check before committing
✅ Stay inside your spiral lane around the island — never cut across!

This approach helps build real driving confidence for your DVSA practical test and applies to many major multi-lane roundabouts across the UK, even though what you’ll actually see — and in what order — differs from one roundabout to the next.

Had a lesson today where a learner was certain they'd checked everything — mirrors done, all clear. Still missed something. 👀

Turns out, there's a gap even a full mirror check won't show you. The Highway Code (Rule 161) puts it best: be aware that mirrors do not cover all areas and there will be blind spots. You will need to look round and check.

The moments it matters most?
👉 Moving off from the side of the road
👉 Changing lanes
👉 Reversing into a space

That extra glance over your shoulder takes one second, but it saves you from failing a test (or worse). It's a small habit at first, but with enough practice, it just becomes second nature. 🚗

Many learners think signalling means "please let me in," so they wait until the lane is completely clear before they even indicate.

It's a common habit, but it works against you during Nottingham’s peak hours—especially when you're trying to navigate bottlenecks around Bramcote, move into the City Centre, or deal with the heavy flow near Chilwell.

The better approach: signal early as part of your plan, keep checking your mirrors and blind spots, and move only once it's genuinely safe. Your signal isn't a request for permission — it's the first step of a safe, planned manoeuvre.
