It's quicker to learn in an Automatic! In the first half of 2026, manual gearboxes accounted for just 7.9% of new car deliveries in the UK, with automatic making up approximately 92.1% of the market.

The AA has proposed replacing the manual test with a conversion course for those already driving autos

🚗 A Message for Anyone Choosing a Driving Instructor
This week I met a new learner who is now on their 4th instructor.

They spent two years with their first instructor, who told them they were “test ready”. Unfortunately, they weren’t even close — and it wasn’t their fault.

Here’s what I discovered in their first lesson with me:

Parking: They had been taught to park on the pavement and didn’t know how to position safely alongside the kerb.

Mirror checks: They’d never been taught to check mirrors when changing speed.

Moving off: No test‑standard observations.

Basic awareness: Skills that should be covered in your first few lessons simply weren’t taught.

Why?
Because their first instructor was unqualified.
Their second shouted constantly.
Their third set the sat‑nav and barely spoke.

Learners deserve better than that.
