Ever wondered what sits behind your flywheel? 👀
The photos attached show the rear crankshaft oil seal, a small but very important component of your engine!
🤔 What does it do?
The rear crankshaft oil seal sits where the crankshaft exits the rear of the engine, behind the flywheel. Its job is to prevent engine oil from leaking out of the engine around the rotating crankshaft.
⚠️ What happens when it starts to fail?
Over time, the seal can wear, harden or become damaged, allowing engine oil to escape. This can lead to:
▪️Oil leaks between the engine and gearbox
▪️Falling engine oil levels
▪️Oil contamination around the clutch, potentially causing clutch slipping
▪️More serious engine problems if oil levels are allowed to drop too low
👨🏼🔧 Why is it important to replace it?
Replacing a rear crankshaft oil seal is a labour-intensive job because the gearbox and flywheel usually need to be removed to gain access. Catching an oil leak early can help prevent further damage and avoid unnecessary repair costs.
At LT Mechanics, we know that even the smallest components can play a big part in keeping your vehicle running smoothly! 💪
