Tonight marks the anniversary of one of the most daring and iconic operations of the Second World War — the Dambusters Raid.

On the night of 16th May 1943, nineteen Avro Lancaster bombers of No. 617 Squadron took off from RAF Scampton under the command of Wing Commander Guy Gibson as part of Operation Chastise. Their mission was to attack key dams deep within Germany’s Ruhr Valley using the now-famous bouncing bomb.

The raid came at enormous cost. Eight aircraft failed to return, and of the 133 aircrew involved, 53 lost their lives, with three captured as prisoners of war. The Mohne and Eder dams were breached during the operation, making the mission one of the most talked-about air operations in history.

Tonight, 83 years later, we remember the courage, skill and sacrifice of those Lancaster crews.

At Flight Simulator Centre Newcastle, we are proud to announce that our brand-new Lancaster Bomber flight simulator is now nearing completion and is due to arrive in around one month’s time. The simulator build is progressing beautifully, and we’re excited to share a few exclusive preview photographs with you below.

This will become one of the most immersive historic aviation experiences anywhere in the UK, giving visitors the opportunity to step into the cockpit of one of the most legendary aircraft ever built.
