Excellent advice to all new learners.
Check your instructors ADI badge, make sure the badge is either Green or Pink and clearly displayed on the vehicle windscreen, and the picture on the badge matches the person giving you the lesson.
We advise you, no badge displayed then the person is not a registered and qualified

Great!
You're passed your driving test and gained your drivers licence.

Now you've got the car and want to get on the road, but eventually things on the car need changing and servicing, we want or need to save money 💰.

If you’re into vehicle mechanics GREAT!

But remember, the vehicle engine is like a human heart, treat it badly and things will go wrong with costly mistakes.

Let's look at changing the oil on a vehicle and why it's absolutely important when buying the correct oil for the vehicle! 🤔

WHY IS USING THE CORRECT ENGINE OIL SO IMPORTANT? 🛢️

Your engine oil does much more than just keep the engine lubricated. Using the correct oil for your vehicle is essential for keeping your engine running efficiently and helping to prevent expensive damage 🙈

✅ Reduces engine wear – protects moving engine components.

🌡️ Helps control temperature – carries heat away from hard-working engine parts.

🧼 Keeps the engine clean – helps reduce sludge and harmful deposits.

⛽ Can improve efficiency – the correct oil can help the engine operate efficiently.

🔧 Protects modern engine systems – some vehicles require specific oils to protect turbochargers, catalytic converters and DPF systems.

⚠️ Don't assume all 5W-30 or 5W-40 oils are the same!

The number on the bottle is only part of the specification. Always check your vehicle handbook and make sure the oil meets the manufacturer's required specification.

💡 New driver tip:
Before topping up your oil, make sure you know which oil your car actually requires. Using the wrong specification could potentially cause problems rather than solve them.

Look after your car and it will be better prepared to look after you on the road

At Driving Skill we regularly get asked a very important question!
This is regarding do you now have to wait six months to book a driving test, from the day of passing your theory test!

The important answer for England, Scotland and Wales is NO.
The six-month rule is NOT currently in force, and there is currently no confirmed date for it to come into force.

So, if you're hearing that “pupils now have to wait six months after passing their theory before they can book/take their practical”, that appears to be referring to the proposed minimum learning-period legislation, rather than a rule currently operating in England, Scotland or Wales.

Where the confusion may be coming from:
There is a six-month rule being introduced in Northern Ireland, but that is a different licensing system.
Northern Ireland has confirmed its Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system will start on 1 October 2026. It includes a mandatory six-month minimum learning period before the practical test.

Hope this helps everyone.

Today, we're going to look at controlling a vehicle while driving downhill.
The method will save you burning your vehicles brakes, which is know as "Brakefade"

Controlling your speed downhill is important in both manual and automatic cars, particularly on steep roads or when approaching bends.

Manual car
The key principle is use the engine to help control your speed, rather than relying heavily on the brakes.

1. Select the appropriate gear before the descent.

•Gentle downhill → 3rd or 4th gear may be suitable.
•Steeper downhill → 2nd or sometimes 1st gear.

2. Lift off the accelerator and allow the engine braking to slow the car.

3. Use the footbrake smoothly if you need to reduce speed further.

4. Once you've reached the speed you want, release the brake and allow engine braking to maintain control.

5. If necessary, apply the brake again rather than keeping your foot continuously on it.

⚠️ Don't coast downhill with the clutch depressed or the car in neutral. You lose engine braking and have less control.

Automatic car
Modern automatics can provide engine braking too.

• Keep the car in Drive on normal descents.

• On a steep downhill, use the car's lower-gear/manual mode, if available.

• Some automatics have L, 2, 1, B or paddle-shift settings that increase engine braking.

• Avoid selecting neutral while travelling downhill.

• Use the brakes progressively when additional speed reduction is required.

A useful learner-driver rule:

Choose your speed and gear before the steepest part of the hill.

Don't wait until the car is already accelerating downhill before trying to regain control.

“Slow down before the descent, select the right gear, then use engine braking to help maintain your speed.”

If you're driving in the UK, always keep a small breakdown kit in the car at all times. You don't need to carry a huge amount of equipment just the essentials.

1. 🚗 Essential breakdown items:

High-visibility vest/jacket – ideally keep it inside the passenger compartment, not in the boot.
Warning triangle – useful on ordinary roads, but don't put one behind your vehicle on a motorway.
Torch – preferably a bright LED torch, with spare batteries.
Phone + charging cable/power bank – keep your phone well charged.
First-aid kit.
Warm clothing/blanket – particularly important in winter.
Drinking water.
Basic snacks – something that won't spoil easily.
Gloves – useful if you need to inspect a tyre or bonnet.
Reflective/LED emergency light – useful at night.
Tyre inflator – a 12V compressor can be very useful.
Tyre pressure gauge.
Puncture repair kit/sealant, if your car doesn't have a spare wheel.
Jump leads or a portable jump starter.
Screenwash – especially during winter.
Basic tools appropriate for your vehicle e.g. small screwdriver set, electrical tape, plyers.

2.📱 Also keep these details handy:

Make sure you know:
Your breakdown recovery provider's phone number/app.
Your vehicle registration number.
Your insurance details.
Where your vehicle handbook is.
How to find your vehicle's locking wheel-nut key, jack and wheel-changing equipment.

3. 🛣️ If you break down on a motorway:

The most important thing is getting yourself and your passengers to safety, rather than trying to repair the car.

If possible, get onto the left-hand verge or behind the safety barrier, leave the vehicle from the left-hand side if safe, and move away from the carriageway. If you're unable to get out safely, stay in the vehicle with your seat belt on and call for help.

If you have no mobile phone signal or your phone is unusable, use the orange emergency telephone provided on motorways. These connect directly to the appropriate road control centre and help identify your location.

Well done to Lee, who passed 1st time at Fort William DTC.
A truly outstanding effort during a 40 hour intensive driving course over 8 days, resulting in a 1st time pass.
Even though Fort William has a 69% pass rate and six test routes, the test routes are not easy, high gradient roads when hill junctions at 270° angles, both up and down with narrow roads that are used by all traffic, including HGV delivery trucks and buses.
Not forgetting the immense amount of tourists in the location being so close to Ben Nevis, the UKs highest mountain.

The booking system has undoubtedly been exploited by bots, unofficial cancellation services and brokers reselling appointments at inflated prices.
During an investigation, the UK National Audit Office found that almost a third of respondents to a DVSA survey had used a third-party reseller, with some paying as much as £500 for a test carrying an official weekday fee of £62.
However, the crackdown resulted in many official users being kicked out of the system and unable to book a driving test.
And still computer bots are accessing the system and ripping off pupils to the price of £500 per time.
When is this problem going to cease!
