Struggling with anxiety behind the wheel? Try this simple trick — the 4-7-8 breathing technique before you set off!

👉 Breathe in for 4 seconds
👉 Hold for 7 seconds
👉 Breathe out for 8 seconds

Do this 2-3 times before starting your journey. It activates your body's natural calm response, slows your heart rate and clears your mind — so you feel more in control before you've even turned the key! 🔑

Here's a practical tip for nervous drivers:

Use the "commentary driving" technique

Narrate out loud what you see and what you're about to do as you drive — for example: "Traffic light ahead turning amber, slowing down... checking mirrors... pedestrian stepping off the kerb on the left..."

This works because it:

Keeps your focus active — your brain stays engaged with the road rather than drifting into anxious thoughts

Slows your thinking down — anxiety often causes rushed, panicked reactions; speaking forces you to process calmly

Builds awareness — you start noticing hazards earlier, which builds genuine confidence over time

Reduces "what if" spiralling — your mind is occupied with what is happening, not what might go wrong
