Of course Norman Hyde heritage is Triumph through and through but over the lock down period we’ve noticed new and used Triumph prices increasing and sales of the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 taking top spot in class in the monthly sales charts, so thought we would take a look and see what it was all about and bought one.
I think there have been enough bike reviews both by professional journalists and the ever-increasing number of self-appointed of YouTube experts or “influencers” for us not to waste space on another. However as we do have a wealth of experience with the 2001 on Bonneville range so some comparisons and observations are probably worth a few words.
Firstly, we like it! We also very much like the price. It obviously can’t compete with the relative power and sophistication of the T120, Speed Twin or Thruxton. But if all you want is some cheap fun with what feels like quite an authentic retro feel and without doubt a genuine retro look then you can see why the sales are strong. There really isn’t anything else at this price point that can give so much.
It’s very easy to take a low cost, low power motorcycle and improve it. But if you have chosen low cost and low power it suggests to us that you don’t want to spend a fortune on very expensive upgrades and engine mods. That makes sense doesn’t it?
So we’ll leave the big bore kits, race cams, the upside down forks and titanium swing arm conversions to somebody else. We have developed some of our own parts and have selected parts from trusted suppliers that we think offer good value upgrades that will genuinely improve your enjoyment of the bike whilst keeping with the original concept.
